Are 'Flatliners' Really Conscious After Death?

Live Science

Driven by ambition and curiosity to learn what lies on the other side of death, five medical students deliberately stop their hearts in order to experience "the afterlife" in the new thriller "Flatliners" (Sony Pictures), which opened in U.S. theaters on Sept. 29.

They quickly discover that there are unexpected and terrible consequences of dallying with death — but not everything they experience after "dying" is in the realm of science fiction. A growing body of research is charting the processes that occur after death, suggesting that human consciousness doesn't immediately wink out after the heart stops, experts say.

But what really happens in the body and brain in the moments after cardiac arrest?   ...

Rest of story
[H]umanity repeats the worst mistakes of previous generations and ... every free, prosperous civilization will eventually be destroyed by that small fraction of its people who find no satisfaction in anything but anger.

Interesting. Thanks @mountaineer

When I had my cardiac arrest, I don't remember being conscious of anything going on around me in real life.  Nor did I see a light or connect with my deceased relatives and friends, as some people who have died or come near death claim they saw.  I do remember having a series of short dreams in which my legs were moving.  One of those dreams involved a friend and I riding bicycles through a park near her home.  I was told later that those leg movements were probably from when the hospital staff was applying the paddles to jump start my heart.   But I had no other consciousness of anyone or anything going on in the room until I woke up to a male nurse pounding on my chest.

And I  can confirm I didn't suddenly develop cerebral superpowers after the arrest.  If anything, my brain turned into mush.  Lost my sense of balance.  I have memory loss.  I start sentences and can't finish them.  And I have an auditory deficiency whereby I can hear people talking, but my brain can't translate what is being said.  Things like that.  But at least I'm still here.  It's something to be grateful for.

By the way, I don't think this Flatliners movie is new.  There was a movie of the same name some years back.  Starred Julia Roberts, I think.  So this movie may be a remake.

Yes, I believe you're correct. And I agree with Tom, you certainly don't write like someone with mush for brains!

If you're conscious,  you're not dead.

And thanks everyone for our response regarding the earlier version of Flatliners.  Maybe my memory isn't as bad after all.   :grouphug:

Unfortunately, the forum's search function isn't working very well right now, or I might have seen it.
