Detroit has now won their first two games, so the above predictions are off to a bad start with that but otherwise, I think they look fairly good.

An annual outdoor showdown to welcome in the new year, this season's rendition is all about the Big Apple, as the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers will square off at Citi Field, home of MLB's New York Mets.

Washington Capitals vs. Vegas Golden Knights,

Right before the post season began, I found a Washington Capitals jersey for a low price at a garage sale... then, the post season opens up, the Capitals dropped their first two games against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

I think the Capitals have a good chance to defeat Vegas.... seems like a fairly evenly matched series.

I have a college classmate who is a Capitals fan and she is over the moon with excitement for her team making it this far.

On the other hand,  you have Vegas, a team that didn't even exist last year. The league said they wanted Vegas to be competitive quickly. Whatever they did, it worked... probably a bit TOO well, considering how many teams have been struggling for many years now.

Part of me admires the heck out of what Vegas has done. Part of me wonders what kind of message it would send that starting a new roster from scratch is an effective way of building a winner. You could have a team fold, then try and re-enter the league just to get a competitive advantage.

That said, I'd be happy if either team won.

Yeah!

It feels weird, truthfully.   That it's over.

I'm locked in a "one more hurdle, one more series" mentality.

Odd story in the NHL:
Quote
Mike Hoffman traded twice, ends up on Panthers amid cyberbullying investigation involving his fiancee

Mike Hoffman was traded twice Tuesday morning, going from the Senators to the Sharks to the Panthers, nearly a week after allegations surfaced that his fianceé harassed Ottawa captain Erik Karlsson's wife online.

The first deal sent Hoffman, ECHL defenseman Cody Donaghey and Ottawa's fifth-round choice in the 2020 draft to San Jose for veteran forward Mikkel Boedker, defenseman Julius Bergman and a sixth-round draft choice in 2020.

Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said in a statement that the trade "showcases our determination to strengthen the future of the team by improving chemistry, leadership and character in the locker room and on the ice."

The article goes on to discuss the revolting conduct by the fiancee, yes, crossing the line.

This is the last hockey thread I have seen here.  Not any action since 2018.  But this year, the Oilers have made it into the finals.  There is a lot of excitement in Edmonton these days.

Stanley Cup Final preview: Edmonton Oilers vs. Florida Panthers schedule, predictions, how teams stack up and more

Sean Leahy  |  Jun 7, 2024, 6:59 AM CDT

Game 1 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final is Saturday night at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida. (Photo by Lawrence Scott/Getty Images)

Stanley Cup hockey in June is becoming the norm. The 2024 Cup Final will be the 14th time since 1993 that the NHL’s championship series will begin in the sixth month of the calendar year.

And should the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers need a seventh game, we’re talking about Gary Bettman handing the Stanley Cup to Aleksander Barkov or Connor McDavid on June 24. That means the ice maintenance crews in Sunrise and Edmonton will be working even harder to make sure the playing surface is in top shape despite the temperatures outside each building.

These teams are in their 10th(!) month of games this season.  .  .

OK, more NHL 2024 news.  Next year, we get our own up-to-date thread, I promise.

Anyway, Florida had taken a quick 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series for the Stanley Cup.  But Edmonton has roared back, winning the next two, and is now leading Game 6 in Edmonton.

Who wins Game 6 of Panthers-Oilers? Stanley Cup Final takes

Jun 21, 2024, 07:00 AM ET

The first three games of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final saw the Florida Panthers build a 3-0 lead, dominating most aspects of play against the Edmonton Oilers.

Games 4 and 5 were a different story entirely, as the Oilers charged back with two straight wins, with four points in each contest for superstar Connor McDavid.

Will the Cats close it out in Game 6? Or will the series continue to Game 7? Our experts are here to break down all the big questions heading into Friday's game  .  .  .

Edmonton Oilers defeat Panthers 5-1 to force Game 7 in Stanley Cup final

The Edmonton Oilers have done the improbable and forced a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup final.

The Oilers defeated the Florida Panthers 5-1 in Game 6 at Rogers Place in Edmonton Friday, their third consecutive win to level the best-of-seven series.

Warren Foegele, Adam Henrique, Zach Hyman, Ryan McLeod and Darnell Nurse — the last two in empty nets — scored for the Oil. Aleksander Barkov replied for the Cats.

The winner-take-all Game 7 is Monday in Sunrise, Fla. – a clash that looked unlikely a week ago when the Oilers fell behind 0-3 in the Stanley Cup final.

Edmonton wants to become the fifth NHL team to come back from an 0-3 deficit to win a series, with only the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs accomplishing that feat in the Stanley Cup final.

The Oilers are looking to join them, and end Canada’s 30-year Cup drought in the process.  .  .  .

Canada's drought continues for another year:

Stanley Cup Final: Panthers win Game 7 thriller over Oilers to secure first championship in franchise history

Jason Owens · Sean Leahy  |  Jun 24, 2024, 11:01 PM EDT

For the first time in history, the Florida Panthers are Stanley Cup champions.

Florida secured a 2-1 Game 7 thriller on Monday to defeat the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final, 4-3. The win staved off a historic collapse after the Oilers rallied from a 3-0 series deficit to tie the series at 3-3.

The first period got off to a scorching start. The Panthers secured the game's first power play on a high-sticking penalty by Warren Foegele less than three minutes in. It didn't directly convert to a power-play goal, but Florida's Carter Verhaeghe broke the scoreless tie seconds after it ended.

Just as Edmonton went back to full strength, Florida's Evan Rodrigues fired a slapshot from the left wall that missed the net wide right. But Verhaeghe knocked the puck from the air with his stick and snuck it past Stewart Skinner for a 1-0 Florida lead.  .  .

The Stanley Cup playoffs are the only professional team sport I watch anymore. The kneelers ruined all the other team sports I used to watch.

There hasn't been any real interest in hockey on this board in a long time. Of course, being a Western New Yorker and watching the absolute mockery that the Buffalo Sabres have become, it's easy to lose interest.

Not to mention the absolute travesty that is seeing Florida teams dominate the league.
