When I was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in 2008, I was told that my ulcerative colitis (UC) was not severe enough to warrant surgery before I was 45 and done having children. Hearing this led me to believe two things:

    I had to be done with children in order to have IBD-related surgery.
    My IBD status would stay the same as it was when I was diagnosed.

Both assumptions couldn’t have been further from the truth, but I just didn’t know.
