I like free trade and open borders, so I never agreed with the old Trump (or Ann Coulter) on immigration and nativism. In one sense, I am thrilled that Trump is backtracking on this particular issue. Also, I am hopeful that renegotiating NAFTA and other trade deals will ultimately result in even fewer trade barriers, especially those imposed by other countries against us. But with Trump, who knows? One thing I am certain of is that with Trump you have to ignore all the rhetorical foreplay and focus in on the actual policy. In this one instance (DACA) it is not a policy I am all that uncomfortable with, though I am probably in the minority on this board. I was uncomfortable with it being done by executive action, but I am not uncomfortable with congress doing it.
It is a good example of Trump going back on his word, and some may wish to gloat about that. But not me. I only voted for him to be better than Hillary, and watching Hillary this week convinces me I was not wrong in that regard.
