Special counsel Robert Mueller’s team is working with New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman on its investigation into Paul Manafort and his financial transactions, according to several people familiar with the matter.

The cooperation is the latest indication that the federal probe into President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman is intensifying. It also could potentially provide Mueller with additional leverage to get Manafort to cooperate in the larger investigation into Trump’s campaign, as Trump does not have pardon power over state crimes.

The two teams have shared evidence and talked frequently in recent weeks about a potential case, these people said. One of the people familiar with progress on the case said both Mueller’s and Schneiderman’s teams have collected evidence on financial crimes, including potential money laundering.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller reportedly is working with a top Trump foe — New York's Democratic Attorney General Eric Schneiderman — in a development that could signal an attempt to get around the president's pardon powers.

As reported by Politico, Mueller and Schneiderman have been in communication in recent weeks and have shared evidence with one another. The joint effort is significant for two reasons: Trump and Schneiderman are political enemies, and the prospect of a state-level probe creates a scenario where Trump's pardon power would be blunted.

New York's attorney general has long been fiercely critical of Trump. He has repeatedly sued or threatened to sue the current administration, and led the charge in the fraud case against Trump University.

Mueller seems to be resorting to more and more legal trickery to get something on this admin. Trying to get state level charges on Manafort? Back dooring with an attack dog seriously undermines the credibility of Mueller's investigation.

They should also remember two crucial concepts: the Supremacy Clause and sovereign immunity. Namely, that a state office cannot prosecute crimes related to federal office. This end-around is a dead end.

Manafort is/was not in office. If they can bend him over on some local malfeasance then they can pressure him to give up all he knows.

Manafort's another issue, but if they think they can get Trump by using this tactic, it's not going to work.

Mueller teams up with IRS in Russia probe: report

Special counsel Robert Mueller is working with members the IRS’ Criminal Investigations (CI) unit as part of the investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, according to a new report.

The Daily Beast reported on Thursday that Mueller has teamed up with agents from the IRS' unit dedicated to prosecuting financial crimes such as tax evasion and money laundering. One retired agent from the team said that the FBI doesn't have the "expertise" that the CI has when it comes to investigating financial crimes.
