Robert E. Lee. Stonewall Jackson. Nathan Bedford Forrest. In the past few weeks, monuments and statues to the Confederacy have been removed around the country. Schools have begun changing their names, and even streets and parks are undergoing name changes. All of this is due to what many see are memorials to one of the darkest sins of our nation, slavery and racism.
There is no doubt that slavery and racism are one of the biggest, if not the biggest sin in this country’s history. A sin that our nation atoned through the shedding of blood of hundreds of thousands of our young men fighting in the Civil War. Even more than a century later, the wounds are still open for many. It took over a century for true individual rights for all men, regardless of race, to come to fruition.
But for all of this, the worst monument to this still stands tall and still has power over much of this country.
This monument to slavery and racism claims with it, the names of the Confederacy and those who led it, including Lee, Jackson, Forest, Davis, Beauregard, and Stewart. This monument to slavery and racism opposed emancipation and fought at the highest levels of government against it.
But this monument didn’t end its fight against liberty after the Civil War. No, this monument fought for more than a century. This monument opened the White House doors to the KKK in 1918. This monument opposed equal civil rights for African Americans in the 60s. This monument had Martin Luther King Jr. imprisoned. This monument even claimed MLK’s assassin as a member of itself. This monument even was proud to have a KKK member in government as recently as 2010 and called that KKK member its conscience.
Even today, this monument feeds off pitting racial groups against each other while pretending to be a caretaker for each just like a plantation owner cared for slaves. This monument even bragged that they would have n****** voting for them for 100 years by enslaving them in welfare.
This one lasting monument to slavery and racism in this country is the monument that must be torn down for true liberty for all individuals to thrive.
This monument is the Democratic Party.
