Strange mantle plume under Iceland helps keep Scotland afloat

By Colin Barras

The plume of hot rock that sits beneath Iceland has long-reaching fingers – two of which stretch all the way to Scotland and Norway. This perhaps explains why the breathtaking scenery of areas such as the Scottish Highlands isn’t submerged beneath the waves.

Mantle plumes are like chimneys that transport hot, buoyant rock from deep inside Earth. When they break through to the surface, the volcanic activity they generate can fuel the formation of islands, such as the Hawaiian archipelago.

You mean it won't tip over like Guam? What if everyone runs to one side at the same time?
How to lose credibility while posting:
1. Trump is never wrong.
2. Default to the most puerile emoticon you can find. This is especially useful when you can't win an argument on merits.
3. Be falsely ingratiating, completely but politely dismissive without talking to the points, and bring up Hillary whenever the conversation is really about conservatism.
4. When all else fails, remember rule #1 and #2. Emoticons are like the poor man's tweet!

That is a good one.

On a serious note, I wonder if other places have similar phenomena; eg volcanos with plumes reaching far away.

Vesuvius, The Pacific rim of Fire, Indonesia, Hawaii, Pacific Northwest, Mexico, Chile, and last but not least, Yellowstone.

Oh yeah, Missouri.

They must do. I know that geologically speaking Vesuvius, Etna, and Thera (Santorini) are often considered three outlets of the same volcano, and that's a couple hundred mile radius.

It is neat though - being able to find out things like this, that no one will ever see with their own eyes.  ^-^
