Now that Windows is going to be a subscription service with the advent of Windows 12 I am looking to cut my cord with Microsoft and switch to Linux.

 

Linux Mint. If you have an old computer in the closet that still works from Windows 10 or even Windows 7 days, I would recommend loading that first and getting some practice before just making the jump for real. I don't mean to scare you - The transition is mostly painless - but it is something you need to build some confidence with.

If your primary computer is a laptop, I strongly suggest you check out a MacBook Pro first. Visit an Apple Store. It won't kill you.

If it's a desktop, you might look at the Mac Mini. A lot of power in a small-sized package.

And if you're one of those "conservatives" who have a foamin' hatred for Apple, put it aside for a moment. Even Rush loved Macs. Don't folks remember?

The Mac OS won't make you a leftie. It won't even try. Trust me on this.

Ran new fiber in my neighborhood recently and as of April 2, have now become a member of the cord cutting group.

To be honest, my wife has doubts and may force me back in as she misses her local tv weatherman,

So I bought an inside antenna to get local stations.

Not perfect, but it works ok so far.

Isn't that ironic that to go modern with cord cutting, one must go retro back to those little antennas we all had way back when?

Both of my local channels have an online broadcast - One 24/7, the other just the news... But you might go look.

Check on YouTube to see if your local station has a channel there. Lots of local stations have started putting their content onto YouTube. I had the same issue of wanting to see my favorite station's weather reports, and now they put all of them up on their YouTube channel. Just try searching YouTube for your local station's call letters.

I checked on youtube as well.  Our local stations have a few highlights, but that's about it.

Even a Window sticky antenna picks up a shocking amount of OTA broadcasts. The last resort antenna is a roof one. I think you have to drill in through the chimney flashing... a professional job if i ever saw one :D.

Where I live, the only OTA TeeVee stations are courtesy of the County's repeaters...home stations are out of either Las Vegas or Phoenix.  I just stream everything on my Amazon Fire Stick, which is cheaper than Cable TeeVee....
