Debunking men’s myths

If you’re a guy, you probably have some theories about testosterone, erectile dysfunction and the like. Now’s your chance to test them.
By Rick Jensen     April 15, 2017

Men live shorter lives and they’re less likely to visit the doctor—not a good combination. (For Spectrum Health Beat)

In the U.S., the average woman can expect to outlive the average guy by about five years.

Despite this sobering statistic, men are somehow twice as likely to entirely avoid a visit to a health care provider, for a panoply of apparent reasons.

My brother is one of those guys.  He has had some respiratory illness for weeks now and won't see a doctor because "doctors can't help.  There is no cure for a cold, so what's a doctor going to do?"  Well, after weeks of hacking and sniffling, it's possible what he has is not a cold.  Only a physician can make an accurate diagnosis.  Secondly, whatever is ailing him might actually be successfully treated with medication.  Lastly,  if what he has is far more serious than a cold, he could be in a life-threatening situation.  He is 66 years old and has had one heart attack.  If he has the flu or pneumonia  he is at significant risk of another heart attack.

But there is no talking to him.  He is supposed to see his cardiologist twice a year, but he tries to put off making an appointment for as long as possible.    The only reason he does eventually see the cardiologist is to be sure he can continue to get prescriptions for his meds. He's now talking about not taking his meds because he feels fine.  That way, he won't have to see the cardiologist.

As a result of higher copays and higher deductibles, it is now even harder to get my husband into going for his yearly check-ups and such.  Thanks, Obama.

IT's a legit sentence. Just a politer way of saying "a load of BS reasons."

Legit, maybe, but it's really bad writing.  My best guess is that the author used it to win a bet on whether he can use "panoply" in a sentence.

A good editor would have cut the number of words in that mess by 50%.

Panoply:
1a: a full suit of armor. Knights in panoply were ready for battle. b: ceremonial attire. The nobles were in panoply for the coronation.

You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.

Waxing loquacious.

What about:
A myriad of various reasons
A host of reasons
A slew of reasons
...
I agree that for whatever reason, the use of 'panoply' is forced.

Panoply.  I had one of them removed on my last butt scope procedure.  Must be where the author found it to use in his piece.

That is hillarious.  But so is everything Dave Barry writes.

It is among my favorite articles.
I read it to my father over the phone some time before his passing... I can still hear his peals of roaring laughter, past tears to near breathlessness... Thus my fondness for a rather unsavory subject matter...

As for men - I'm glad they are mysterious. If they weren't, wouldn't they be women? I'll never understand men as long as I live, yes, they confuse me. Sometimes they drive me nuts. But in the end, the ones I've had either as platonic friends or as romantic ones have been wonderful. And I appreciate the fact they for the most part see the world differntly or approach it differently than I do.

I would agree with that.  Laura Schlesinger once said that men are simple...it's true, but I don't say that to be disparaging or condescending at all.  There are certain things that mean a lot to men---sex, food, treating them with respect instead of running them down, making sure they feel valued, letting them help to solve problems.  And understanding that, not being women, sometimes they express their love for you by repairing something instead of writing flowery declarations.

@CatherineofAragon

It's true. If you want a man to be happy, helpful, and devoted all it takes is:
Respect of honor
Guuuud cookin'
A little shake of the sugar-shaker now and then (the more sugar the better),
A tolerance of man-toys (largely the very things he needs to provide).

And a whole lot of patience.
We haven't changed very much since we were 10. As the saying goes: 'The only difference between men and boys is the size of their... um... feet, and the price of their toys." We need to be justified. We need it to be a big deal when we do right. We need the pat on the head,as it were. And a lot of the time, we need to find out for ourselves that we are doing a dumb thing, even though you may know better. :)

I have never understood why women need to complicate upon that. A man will drive himself into the ground for a woman with just a little dose of sure-fire lovin. I think that's why Southern women tend to get their way... Culturally, they manipulate their man shamelessly (and he knows it), but the reward is always ever-so-sweet.

I don't care if that is sexist. It works.
