Ginsburg to skip Trump Congress speech: report

By Mark Hensch - 02/28/17 07:02 PM EST

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg plans on missing President Trump’s first address to a joint session of Congress, according to a new report.

Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas also intend on avoiding Tuesday’s speech, continuing their past absence at similar events, Bloomberg said.

Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg told Bloomberg Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Anthony Kennedy, Stephen Boyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan will be in attendance.

Bloomberg said Ginsburg, who was appointed by former Democratic President Bill Clinton in 1993, also skipped former GOP President George W. Bush’s speeches during her tenure.
The liberal-leaning justice was more receptive to Trump’s Democratic predecessor, catching all eight of former President Barack Obama’s addresses before a joint session of Congress.

Alito has not attended a speech since 2010, Bloomberg said, the year Obama criticized the justices’ freshly-issued ruling on campaign finance in its Citizens United case.

Obama accused the nation’s highest court of disregarding 100 years of precedent, a claim that made Alito shake his head and mouth “not true” as Democratic lawmakers applauded behind him.

Thomas’s attendance record is also spotty, having not witnessed such an address since Obama’s first in 2009.

The justice said in 2010 that the event had become so partisan that “it’s very uncomfortable for a judge to sit there.”

Roberts has never missed a speech, Bloomberg added, despite questioning whether justices should attend events so like a “political pep rally” in the past.

Ginsburg called Trump a “faker” in July, arguing the then-presumptive 2016 GOP presidential nominee “has no consistency about him.”

Big deal. Ginsburg has been 'skipping' SOU's ect. for years now.

Hell she 'skips' half of the court cases she presides over.

She doesn't want the optics of being caught sleeping again, so she took the Safe Harbor option, as a couple of Supremes always do.

And the other half she does attend she probably sleeps through.

I don't think the USSC justices should be there anyway, it is an address to Congress, not even a an official SOTU.

   I did find this interesting:

Probably because this is considered an overtly 'political' event.

Of course in reality so are SOUs.

She is not a member of Congress.

Why do people confuse this with a state of the union?

Either one would make a great next judge, you think? Personally, I think justice Ginsberg should think of retiring this year. It's time. Spend the rest of her life chillaxing, teaching, doing what ever her heart desires.

It has all them pomp, circumstance and trappings of a SOU.  I still hear people who should know better say that Joe Wilson yelled "You lie!!" at the SOU Address, when it wasn't a SOU, just a speech like this one.
