Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that affects soft areas between the toes and sometimes other parts of the foot. It may lead to severe itching, flaking, scaling, burning, bleeding and stinging. (1, 2)

The condition is called Tenia pedis and is one of the commonest types of fungal infection.

This type of skin fungal infection is related to ringworm and jock itch.

It is sometimes referred to as the “ringworm of the foot”. It is caused by skin fungi called “trichophyton".

Athlete's foot or Tenia pedia is a fungal; infection of the skin affecting skin between the toes and sometimes over the foot. (1)
Fungi causes Athlete’s foot

The cause of this condition is a mould-like fungi called dermatophytes.

These fungi normally exist in the folds of the skin of the foot and their growth is restricted if the foot is clean and dry.

However, if a person wears closed, tight shoes and sweats too much, there is a warm wet atmosphere that allows the fungi to grow.

Plastic shoes are also triggers for growth of these fungi.

Athlete’s foot or Tinea pedis is caused by a fungal infection between the toes and over the foot. The commonest symptoms are itching, burning, stinging, flaking, scaling, blistering and bleeding skin between the toes or the sides of the feet.
Symptoms of the condition

Red and itchy skin between toes and sides of the feet.
Burning, and stinging of the skin
Peeling, flaking and scaling of the affected skin
Blistering that may ooze secretions or bleed. The lesions may appear crusty or weeping.
Secondary bacterial infections may occur at the raw infected sites. This complicates the infection with pain, swelling, bleeding, oozing or formation of pus.
Thick, discoloured and easily breakable toe nails. This is called onychomycosis.
Associated fungal infections may occur. These include ringworm on any part of the skin or jock’s itch over the groin.
Sometimes athlete’s foot can be spread to the hands. This condition is called tinea manuum. It occurs when a sufferer of Athlete’s foot does not wash his or her hands after touching the infected skin on their feet. (1, 2, 3, 4)

Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection affecting the skin over the feet and between toes.

Most cases are mild and can be treated at home. The infection often responds well to antifungal therapy.

Initially only local ointments and creams containing antifungal agents may be prescribed.

If the infection is severe or recurs oral antifungal agents may be needed.

Untreated the infection spreads to toenails, palms of the hands etc. and may lead to complications such as secondary bacterial infection.

Looks like its time to ditch the Crocs.

I had a nasty case of AF back in middle school, & mom made me wear sandals with white socks to school, the 70s equivalent of wearing Crocs. I hid a pair of Chucks in the bushes at the end of our driveway I'd change into and out of before and after I got home.

So it took me a year to get rid of the grunge. And only because Tinactin had just become available.

If someone is old enough to drink and vote and they are wearing crocks, Trump needs to deport them to Greece.
