I've been there twice. Very sobering. If you can visit only one camp, may as well go to Dachau as it's near a large city and readily accessible.

On the second visit, we took a city bus out from Munchen on which there also was a large group of teens of swarthy Mediterranean appearance headed to the camp. I guess their teacher was with them. They were loud and obnoxious, bouncing around the bus, sticking their faces in other people's faces, etc., when an elderly German woman started berating them for their rude behavior. From what we could understand, she said (in German, of course), "There is no place in Germany for foreigners!"

"There is no place in Germany for foreigners!"

If that is really what she said I wonder how she feels about Merkel's importation of Muslims?

It's a very solemn place. Went with my uncle, back in 1980. Wish I hadn't, TBH.

Labels are a funny thing these days.  When we say "the Left" people associate that term with Democrats as a sort of catch-all phrase.  When we say "Progressives" people think of Democrats who have moved a few steps to the Left and solidly into the world of Socialism.  But what happens when these Progressive Socialists take another few steps to the Left into more radical territory?

We call them a far-right group.

----

In the 1920's the National Socialist German Workers' Party was a small faction among a dozen of factional parties in Germany.  They would gain a small foothold of power, lose it, then regain it again in another election.  This period of turmoil in Germany was one where elections were held quite often as the country tried various political solutions in an attempt to recover from the aftermath of WWI.

Hitler's powerful and spellbinding speeches promised a new kind of Socialism, one of hope and change.  With the aid of extremely effective marketing and propaganda Hitler's message captured the dreams of his growing legion of followers who viewed him as a rock star.  His followers became fixated and obsessed with every speech, never doubting his words for a single moment.  Of course, Hitler never mentioned the parts about dissolving the parliament, eliminating free speech, and eliminating anyone who posed a threat to his power.

As the National Socialist German Workers' Party gained ever increasing power they used that power to rule with an ever increasing heavy hand.  We all know the rest of the story.

Today when we refer to the Nazi's we most often call them a far-right group.  In reality they were Progressive Socialists who took another few steps to the Left into more radical territory.

There is a difference in the definition of a European leftist and an American leftist.

I've been to Dachau twice, too. It is the most sobering place I've ever visited.

Also visited Flossenburg twice. The locals added nicer landscaping, but the towers and place where executions took place remain.

How about someone corrects the title of this thread and removes the "President".  The title of the article begins with "Pence"?????

I guarantee Auschwitz is ten times more sobering.  Especially where they display the toys of the children that were gassed.

I've never (yet) had the opportunity to visit Auschwitz. We went to Flossenburg a few years ago; that's where Dietrich Bonhoeffer was hanged.

Mr. M's uncle (a Chetnik fighter from present day Croatia) was incarcerated in a satellite camp of Mauthausen, so we'd like to see it. He was captured by the Germans and they saved his life.

My father's mother's entire family went into the ovens.  They originally lived in Poland.
Too sad to hear our president ignore the jewish people exterminated during the holocaust.
