2016 was a disastrous year for Democrats - and not just because they lost a little thing called the White House. They woke up the day after the election with champagne hangovers, caviar breath, and the horrific realization that they’d become a small, ineffectual, bi-coastal political party-ette. Worse, they were forced to admit that their media allies could no sell their tin as gold. So, they took a look at their parties “bench” to determine what comes next.
...That’s when the real panic set in. The GOP had just produced a field of 16 candidates - at least 14 of which enjoyed some level of popularity. A few of them were young enough to try again in 2024, or even 2028.
Meanwhile, the Democrats ran a geriatric throwback, a socialist coot they actively tried to push out of the race, and a guy who really likes the metric system.
Now, they’re searching for a savior.
If the National Journal is right (they’re not) that savior’s name is…
Al Franken.Al Franken isn’t a punch line in the Senate anymore. He’s emerged as one of the Democrats’ most aggressive and effective questioners of President Trump’s Cabinet nominees. He’s generated numerous made-for-TV clips as one of the few Democrats willing to go full-bore against his party’s top targets—Jeff Sessions, Tom Price, and Betsy DeVos. He’s finally showing some personality in the Senate, punctuated by his laugh-out-loud exchange with Energy Secretary-designate Rick Perry. And he’ll be one of nine Democrats on the Judiciary Committee questioning Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch. This is Al Franken’s moment in the spotlight, and if he chooses, he could parlay his good fortune into a bid for the presidency in 2020.
Are there enough illegally voting felons to get Franken to the presidency?
Please Dems. Do this. Nominate Al FrankenProbably not. And Josh Kraushaar, the guy who wrote the Journal’s “think piece” seems to know it.
To be sure, Franken, 65, may not be the Democrats’ strongest candidate in the general election. His deeply liberal politics and long-standing dismissiveness of Republicans turn off many voters in the middle. But with Democrats looking for strident opposition to Trump in the early days of his presidency, they’re probably not going to be in a pragmatic mood in the primaries.
In other words: “he probably won’t win but Democrats are angry.” Nominating Franken is like dating a high school drop out to get back at your parents. You’ll probably dump him later, since he’s not marriage material, but oh the looks on their faces when he comes to Thanksgiving dinner!
Please Dems. Do this. Nominate Al Franken. Guarantee Donald Trump an 8-year stint as President of the United States.
