Moon's Been Getting Oxygen from Earth's Plants for Billions of Years

The moon may carry material produced by life from Earth dating back to when plants first filled the planet's air with oxygen, according to study of data from a Japanese lunar orbiter.

A team led by Kentaro Terada of Osaka University looked at data from the Selenological and Engineering Explorer, better known as Kaguya. The researchers found that a certain kind of oxygen isotope was present in the lunar soil, an isotope that occurs on Earth.

Almost all of the oxygen in Earth's atmosphere for the last 2 and a half billion years came from photosynthesis. That means the moon's rocks have been picking up small amounts of oxygen from living things on Earth; the moon is "contaminated" with the waste products of plants, the researchers said.

And that's why all plants on Earth must be destroyed, to keep them from further contaminating the Moon with their waste by-products. < /crazed eco-freak >

But more seriously, this article taught me a word I did not know: selenology, the branch of astronomy concerned with the Moon; word derived from the Greek goddess of the Moon, Selene.

And also, by searching out the source of the probe's nickname "Kaguya", I learned about the Tale of Princess Kaguya, a.k.a. the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.

It's kind of interesting to see, as other countries venture into space, what their spacecraft get named after...   :pondering:

Many bits of trivia have done me no good in life, but back in the 80s, there was a bar that offered drinks for an extra quarter for a trivia question....and if you got the question right, you got the quarter back and the drink was free.

I never paid for a drink there...  and two of those free drinks were from the "selenology" question, so I'm rather fond of it!

Back in 1994 I worked with a guy who tried out for "Jeopardy" three times . I got tired of him saying how hard the test was and no one could pass it.

So I took it. And passed it. Then I told them I didn't want to be on the show, I just wanted to take the test to see how I did.

Anyway, if I could pass it, I know our members here certainly could.

And now, back to Luna.

Not really.  Even though the Earth's magnetosphere protects the Earth from most of the effects of the solar wind, it does strip off a little of the atmosphere.  Every time the Moon passes behind the Earth relative to the Sun, some of that stripped off atmosphere would probably end up hitting, and sticking to, the Moon.
