He was very appropriate to point out. He lost the election to Hitler because people voted third party for this guy:
Ernst Thälmann

First off, a lot of Germans saw Hitler as a great guy. He was going to 'make Germany great again'. He was going to rebuild industry, put people back to work, get rid of those undesirables.....and he did. He even had a great public works project (it was, pardon the expression, Yuuuge). Central control of education, and the media were only allowed to say nice things about him. People all around the globe thought he was the greatest thing that happened to Germany, so much so they let him slide on the size of his military, turned a blind eye to domestic policies which were unsavory, and even tried to appease him and have 'peace in our time'.
Until they couldn't.
FWIW, I'm not voting for Johnson, either. I'm not voting for Trump out of fear of Hillary, and I'm not voting for that Crook, either.
Instead, I will cast my ballot where I can fully support the Party Platform and the candidate, and while not enough people will do so to keep either Trump or Hillary out of office, at least if I go to meet my maker I will have made a moral choice. If Hillary goes "full Hitler", my rule of three goes into effect. If Trump does, ditto.
