WHY HILLARY GAVE THE ‘ALT-RIGHT’ SPEECHBy: Amanda Carpenter | August 26, 2016
For all the talk about Hillary Clinton’s “Alt-Right” speech in Reno yesterday not many people are asking why she delivered it. Here is the reason, illustrated in GIF form.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dahKNOdaLjoSee that woman standing behind Trump to the left? She came to his rally, likely because she supports him. Likely because she wants to clap and cheer. Likely because she wants to see a Republican win the White House. But then he wielded the word “bigot” like a sledgehammer, prompting a physical recoil.
Clinton is speaking directly to voters like that woman who are, probably, loyal Republicans but are blown back by Trump’s blunt behavior. An explanation of the Alt-Right provides a reason why voters can be Republican but also not be attracted to Trump. He’s not one of them. He’s Alt-Right, which trafficks in conspiracy theories, white nationalism, and fury.
For goodness sakes, Clinton even defended Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas (A, 97%) from Trump’s smears.
Hardly anyone is feeling the love though when words such as “bigot” are being thrown around, even making some of Trump’s fans question his tactics.
Trump, for his part, denies that the Alt-Right even exists — sure to disappoint his most ardent fans and quite a slam against his new campaign CEO Steve Bannon who styled his website Breitbart News as a champion of it.
"There's no 'alt-right' or 'alt-left.' All I'm embracing is common sense," Trump told CNN’s Anderson Cooper yesterday. "We're bringing love."
Hardly anyone is feeling the love though when words such as “bigot” are being thrown around, even making some of Trump’s fans question his tactics.
And, this gets to the real reason why Clinton gave that speech. She wants to make Trump supporters reconsider their support. She wants to make them squirm. She wants to remind them that most people don’t think, talk, or treat people the way he does. He’s not like you.
What much of the press is missing, however, is how Trump handed Clinton the opportunity to do this by hiring Bannon.
Had Trump not hired Bannon, Clinton would not have given that speech. There would have been no clear and direct link between the Trump campaign and the Alt-Right. As of last week, they are fused.
With Bannon, the Alt-Right is literally running the Trump campaign. And, many Republican voters can now reasonably say, “Yes, I am Republican, but I’m not one of them. I’m not Alt-Right. I don’t have to support Donald Trump.”
Clinton couldn’t have asked Trump to make a better hire to help her campaign
