Weaver does not entirely disapprove of the gentleman; he is the replacement for the philosophic doctor, minus the religious foundation. Great interest in the liberal arts in the time of Sir Thomas More, Rabelais, and Thomas Elyot appeared and was relied on to provide the broad understanding and moral character the gentleman needed but would not receive from the bosom of the church. The gentleman was an idealist, brought up to live by a code of ethics and proper sentiment, though, lacking the grounding in religion he needed, he was only a partial replacement for the doctor of philosophy.

Still, as long as the West could hold on to a gentleman class, there was some protection for the transmission of tradition and culture. If their ideal was imperfect and not always realized, the very existence of such a class as an ideal out-weighed any disadvantages. By far, Weaver says, the most significant aspect of the idea of a gentleman is his distrust of specialization.

All my neighbors these days are elderly southerners from Texas, Alabama, and Kentucky. Their opinions as southern gentlemen is unanimous that Trump is somewhere beneath a good coonhound and slightly superior to a possum.

It reminds me of Zell Miller suggesting to Chris Matthews that he needed to be taken out behind the woodshed and whooped till he learned to respect women. (Matthews had said something nasty to Michelle Malkin)

Years ago, I read Robert J. Ringer's Winning Through Intimidation. If I had to pick anything which reminded me of Trump, that book sums it up.
