Quote
A day after South Sudan marked its fifth year of independence, the world’s youngest country is on the verge of sliding back into civil war. An estimated 272 people have been killed as rival government factions clashed in Juba today (July 10), dimming hopes that the latest peace deal will hold.

Gunfire was heard in the suburbs of Gudele and Jebel, near army barracks, the airport, as well as United Nations compounds that house thousands of displaced citizens. Local journalists reported seeing at least 100 bodies laying on the ground near the presidential palace and near UN bases.

The country is “back to war,” a spokesman for vice president Riek Machar, head of one of the rival factions, told the BBC. A government spokesman disagreed with Machar’s characterization saying, “The situation is normal and it is under full control.”

If these idiots don't get their act together their country is going to be ruled by Muslims from the north and ISIS.

I tend to think there will always be wars and conflict in Sudan.....they're on the map to be an Islamic nation....until that happens the MMuslims will fight their own to make it that.

South Sudan is doing a terrible job of keeping their republic independent. Then again, maybe Sudan doesn't want it any more.

UN BAN isn't happy as they attacked their compounds.

that heavy fighting in Juba town, had prompted approximately 1,000 internally displaced people to flee from the UNMISS protection of civilians site (into the UNMISS compound at UN House Jebel.

[Civilian protection sites have been up and running in various parts of South Sudan 'for the past two years' and according to its most most recent update, UNMISS estimates that the number of civilians seeking safety in the six sites located on UNMISS bases is 169,418.

In an email, J. Peter Pham, the director of the Africa Center at the Atlantic Council in Washington, said it was unclear how much sway Mr. Kiir and Mr. Machar and other faction leaders in the “so-called transition government” had over their fighters.

“Between the collapse of oil prices and the destruction they themselves wrought in the civil war, South Sudan is so destitute that there are no resources with which the country’s rulers might employ to bring their followers to heel,” Mr. Pham said

That description reminds me of Somalia and its "federal government" that had control of only a few blocks of downtown Mogadishu when first put together

In Somalia, a lot like South Sudan, they also had a chance to establish a government to protect their independence but corruption runs rampant. You might think sane people in government would do their best to win before they'd start looting. What they are doing is going to help their nation lose and they'll be among the first strung up.

That should be incentive enough. I guess they don't have any George Washington and Thomas Jefferson's over there.
