Chinese poachers find more leniency in South Korea

Quote
Blue crab fishing season has arrived for the fishermen in both North and South Korea, but South Korean fishermen have frequently witnessed illegal Chinese fishing boats poaching their supply. The situation has become a heated point of contention in recent times, highlighted by an incident in which South Korean fishermen from the islands of Baengnyeong and Yeonpyeong decided to take matters into their own hands by seizing two Chinese boats and handing them over to the coast guard. However, the actions of these illegal Chinese trawlers differ widely in approach when it comes to poaching in North and South Korean waters.

North Korean waters are said to have a much richer abundance of fish due to the North’s relatively ill-equipped boats, but despite this, Chinese boats generally avoid fishing in these areas out of fear of the country’s violent coastal patrol guards. When North Korean patrol boats discover an illegal Chinese vessel in their waters, the boats are chased down and the entire vessel and its catch are confiscated in the name of penalizing their illegal entry.

An indebted young woman in Ryanggang Province, North Korea murdered a loan shark who relentlessly pressured her to pay back the loan, Daily NK has learned.

"A 22 year-old female market vendor attacked and killed a loan shark with a knife in Kimjongsuk County on June 4. The woman has been arrested and an investigation is underway at the Ministry of People’s Security unit in Sinpa County. A trial will be held soon,” a source in Ryanggang Province reported to Daily NK on June 9.

"The young woman was unable to pay back the interest on the loan by its due date. The attack happened in a store late at night when no other people were present. A kitchen knife was the weapon used in the attack."

The North Korean authorities have launched a "loyalty donation campaign" directed at Pyongyang citizens to obtain funding for the Ryomyong Street construction project in the capital, which is being hailed as another legacy project for Kim Jong Un. Daily NK has learned that households have been pressured to donate 50 USD, leading to complaints among the public.

The campaign comes at a time when the North is struggling under international sanctions and a decline in income from workers dispatched overseas, after two separate groups of restaurant workers escaped to South Korea.

“Following the declaration of the ‘200-Day Battle’, propaganda lectures claiming that we must ‘support the construction of Ryomyong Street both physically and philosophically’ was delivered at state factory lectures and inminban (people’s unit) meetings,” a source from Pyongyang told Daily NK on June 9. “The lecturers are telling people that Pyongyang’s Ryomyong Street is going to be the General’s (Kim Jong Un) gift to scientists for the country’s advancement, and so Pyongyang citizens should lead the way in showing their loyalty.”

Crackdown targets messaging apps

North Korean users of foreign messenger applications such as Kakao Talk, Line, and WeChat will be arrested on the spot on suspicion of espionage, according to a new order handed down from the authorities. Sources inside the country interpret the move as Kim Jong Un's aggressive reaction to the capability of Chinese cellphones to facilitate the import and export of information into the isolated country.

As recently reported by Daily NK, the North Korean authorities have ramped up efforts to label Chinese cellphone users as traitors and pursuing strict punishments against them. To this end, North Korean authorities doubled down on the use of signal detectors to trace illicit international calls and zero in on the location of foreign phone users.

However, the messenger apps allow users to circumvent detection by this equipment, prompting the regime to respond with new threats specifically targeting users of these communication applications.
