This is not a hypothetical warning. Well-known Washington's Blog recently reported that the "Overwhelming Majority of Americans Believe That Both Parties Are Too Corrupt to Change Anything ... 'This, in Fact, Is a Revolution'."

The article summarizes a Huffington Post article in which a "group of Republican and Democratic pollsters and political strategists" provide some "stunning" online results based on polling data:

   * 84% of all Americans believe political leaders are more interested in protecting their power and privilege than doing what is right

   * 81% percent believe the power of ordinary people to control our country is getting weaker every day as politicians of both parties fight to protect their own power and privilege

   * 80% believe the federal government is its own special interest primarily looking out for itself

   * 78% believe that the Democratic and Republican Parties are essentially useless in changing anything, because both political parties are too beholden -75% believe that the US government is
NOT working for the people's best interest

    * 74% see the biased and slanted coverage of the media as part of the problem

    * 71% believe our government is not only dysfunctional, it is collapsing right before our eyes

    * 70% believe the government in Washington does not govern with the consent of the people

Do any of these people vote?

They have what they want. They vote in politicians and then get pissed off over the people they vote in.

70% believe the government in Washington does not govern with the consent of the people

Who the hell put the government in office?

By the way, "online results" are not scientific.  Online polls, being self-selective, are worthless.

That's an interesting question, Sinkspur.  You and I and most everybody here votes.  Is it as simple as the Mark Twain quote, something to the effect that if voting were effective, they wouldn't let us do it?

People have what they want.

People who stay in rotten marriages have what they want.

People who hate their jobs have what they want.

Voters vote for legislators who disappoint them, then they vote for them AGAIN.

They have what they want.

I differ. People select from what they perceive to be their options, and then often are unhappy with the result.

The entire 21st century thus far in America has seen nothing but disastrous government, regardless of who has sat in the Oval Office, regardless of which party was a majority in Congress.  Failure across the board, and its impact is seen in a deteriorating standard of living - dramatically impacting the young - and a moribund economy, a tide that raises only a few privileged boats, while the rest take on water.

What else could be expected in such a poll?  The people are seeing with their own eyes.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
Because in our system of govt there are two levels of majority. The first is the party at the ballot box. The second is the leadership of that party in the legislative caucus and the various levels of party central committees.

Most work or want to change the first, but forget about the second. The latter is for example where the Tea Party and similar orgs have tried to focus. They've had some victories, but aren't close to the goal.

When you have Republicans that will vote in someone like Mitch McConnell in over and over, you've got problems that will not be fixed just by beating the Democrats. Until we are willing to as a majority to take that second step, the leadership of the party is going to continue doing what it is doing.
