To paraphrase Meat Loaf, one out of two ain’t bad.
Pete Rose, baseball’s all-time hits leader, will be inducted into a hall of fame, just not the one he has yearned to be a member of ever since he received a lifetime ban from the game in 1989 for committing the cardinal sin of gambling.
The Cincinnati Reds, with whom Rose won two World Series rings and the club he was managing when he was kicked out of baseball, announced Tuesday that Charlie Hustle will become a member of the franchise’s Hall of Fame during ceremonies held at Great American Ball Park the weekend of June 24-26. Rose’s No. 14 will also be retired.
“It's an honor, a real honor. Not very many athletes get to have such a special honor in the their hometown,” Rose said in a statement to the Daily News through his attorney, Ray Genco. “This is a really big deal.”
