George Michael has died at his home in Oxfordshire.
The musician's publicist said that he had 'passed away peacefully' at his property in Goring at 1.42pm today.
Michael, 53, had previously battled drug addiction and came close to death after suffering from a bout of pneumonia in 2011.
However, the circumstances around his death are currently unexplained and police are not treating the death as suspicious.

I'm going to guess that this will turn out to be suicide or drug overdose. Which is sometimes the same thing.

From all reports I have heard and read about him in the last few years, his life was in pretty bad shape.

More re George Michael:
Quote
... A police statement said: “Thames Valley Police were called to a property in Goring-on-Thames shortly before 2 p.m. Christmas Day. Sadly, a 53-year-old man was confirmed deceased at the scene. At this stage the death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.”

Mr. Michael’s manager, Michael Lippman, told The Hollywood Reporter that Mr. Michael had died of heart failure “in bed, lying peacefully.”  ...

Last night at TOS, they were having a big laugh about Michaels' death...it was joke material to them.  It's true, he led a high risk lifestyle, but celebrating his death is vile.

I liked his solo stuff, especially "Freedom 90. "

I'm part of a "Jesus music" page at Facebook, and this was posted there:

In memory of George Michael, I always thought this was an interesting commentary on God and faith. In some ways it seems critical of God, and definitely of those who consider themselves God's children; but it also seems sympathetic to God in a way.

At TOS, it's okay to celebrate the death of anyone who isn't one of them,  especially if the deceased was homosexual.

About the only homosexual I can recall TOS members shouting down all celebration of their death was Freddie Mercury.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Ed Reinecke, who resigned as California's lieutenant governor after a perjury conviction, dies at 92

Quote
Ed Reinecke, the California lieutenant governor who resigned after being convicted of perjury in a Watergate-era scandal, died Saturday in Laguna Hills.

He was 92 and died of natural causes, said his son, Mark Reinecke...

Reinecke was a protege of then-Gov. Ronald Reagan...

The conviction was eventually overturned because of a technicality: the Senate Judiciary Committee had not officially published a rule permitting a one-man quorum, and the special Watergate prosecutor had not established that more than one senator attended the hearing...

After Reinecke’s downfall, Reagan remained loyal to his former lieutenant, soliciting funds to help him pay his legal bills...

Vera Rubin, pioneering "dark matter" astronomer, dead at 88

PRINCETON, N.J. — Vera Rubin, a pioneering astronomer who helped find powerful evidence of “dark matter” in the universe, has died. She was 88.

Allan Rubin says his mother died Sunday night of natural causes. A Philadelphia native, Vera Rubin had been living in the Princeton, New Jersey, area, he said.

Rubin found that galaxies don’t quite rotate the way they were predicted, and that lent support to the theory that some other force was at work, namely dark matter.

Dark matter, which hasn’t been directly observed, is believed to make up 27 percent of universe — as opposed to 5 percent of the universe being normal matter. Scientists better understand what dark matter isn’t rather than what it is.

Rubin never received the Nobel Prize for her work, but her name was long floated for the prestigious award.

Emily Levesque, an astronomer at the University of Washington in Seattle, is among those scientists who believe Rubin deserved the honor.

“The existence of dark matter has utterly revolutionized our concept of the universe and our entire field; the ongoing effort to understand the role of dark matter has basically spawned entire subfields within astrophysics and particle physics at this point,” Levesque told Astronomy Magazine in June. “Alfred Nobel’s will describes the physics prize as recognizing ‘the most important discovery’ within the field of physics. If dark matter doesn’t fit that description, I don’t know what does.”

In addition to her breakthrough discoveries, Rubin was considered a champion for women in astronomy, putting constant pressure on powerful factions in the field to recognize women’s contributions.

Invited to the highly regarded Palomar Observatory outside San Diego early in her career, Rubin did not accept the building’s lack of a women’s restroom at face value.

“She went to her room, she cut up paper into a skirt image, and she stuck it on the little person image on the door of the bathroom,” former colleague Neta Bahcall of Princeton University told Astronomy Magazine. “She said, ‘There you go; now you have a ladies’ room.’ That’s the type of person Vera is.”

In recent years, Rubin was reportedly unhappy that stubborn gender inequities continued to pervade her field. In 2000, she told Astronomy writer Ann Finkbeiner she was “getting fed up... What’s wrong with this story is that nothing’s changing, or it’s changing so slowly,” the magazine reported.

On Monday, scientists and admirers across the internet mourned Rubin’s passing:

Rubin’s scientific achievements earned her numerous honors, including becoming the second female astronomer to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

She also received the National Medal of Science from President Bill Clinton in 1993 “for her pioneering research programs in observational cosmology.”

Rubin’s interest in astronomy began as a young girl and grew with the involvement of her father, Philip Cooper, an electrical engineer who helped her build a telescope and took her to meetings of amateur astronomers.

She was the only astronomy major to graduate from Vassar College in 1948. When she sought to enroll as a graduate student at Princeton, she learned women were not allowed in the university’s graduate astronomy program, so she instead earned her master’s degree from Cornell University.

Rubin earned her doctorate from Georgetown University, where she later worked as a faculty member for several years before working at the Carnegie Institution in Washington, a nonprofit scientific research center.

During her career, Rubin examined more than 200 galaxies.

Actually, you're right.  I remember when Senator Wellstone was killed some years back.  The comments at TOS made my hair stand on end.  Ok, the guy was uber-liberal, maybe a socialist.  But now that he has passed,  all of that really doesn't matter anymore.  Remember that he had a wife and family who loved him very much and are grieving his passing.  So forget about the differences, offer condolences and pray for his soul and the comfort of his loved ones .  If you really can't do any of that, say and do nothing at all.

The Dems had a hand in that dancing because they tried to use Wellstone's funeral service as a political rally for his successor.  They even demanded Jesse Ventura and Schwarzenegger to stand in support of their candidate.  They refused, to their credit.

Obama did the same thing in Tucson at the funeral of the Federal Judge that was killed in the same attack that Gabby Giffords got shot (even distributed T-shirts at the venue).  It hurt the Dems both times, but they never learn, all they know is regardless of the party affiliation of the deceased, he/she is a newly minted Dem voter.

@CatherineofAragon

@Applewood

A friend of mine over there, a longtime Freeper, can often be seen scolding them (deservedly) for their hilarity on obituary threads.  As I recall, they were pretty nasty when David Bowie died.

Carrie Fisher has died.

Multiple reports.

@mystery-ak and mods, should headline be changed?

Women don't survive heart attacks the way men do.

This miserable year is almost over, but it's trying to take as many people with it as it can.

2016 can (blank) off.

Yes. I noted earlier in the obits section Richard Adams, the author of "Watership Down" died this morning too.

She's in critical condition and in the ICU.  Her brother is denying earlier reports of her being stable.

I wonder what the point was in telling everyone she was stable when clearly she wasn't.

I think we all would like to go peacefully in our beds when it's our time, IMHO.
Nah, I want to go out with my boots on in a blaze of glory.

She may have been stable at the time of the announcement. A massive heart attack can have lingering effects with other organs being damaged. They may have had her stabilized but the weaker heart muscle and damage to other organs may have caused her to take a turn for the worse as it simply couldn't keep up with the body's demands.

I would have thought they'd check all of those organs' functionality prior to declaring her stable. But then I'm not a medical professional.

Thanks @Machiavelli

Rest In Peace Carrie.
@Freya

As an EMT, I didn't think she would survive.  For one thing, she was on an extremely long flight and likely she didn't walk on the plane.  Sitting that long on a plane causes blood to collect in the legs/feet and can cause blood clots, especially if the heart is already compromised.  These clots can move to the heart and stop it.

For those of you who fly or have flown overseas to Europe in the past, you likely noted your feet had swelled by the time you touched down overseas or flying back from there.  Her flight was longer than flying from central US or the east coast to or back from Europe.  I don't recall the country she left but did note it was a longer flight to California than the east coast or central US.  Blood clots was my first thought when I heard her heart stopped.
