Not very like-minded, which is why the slavery compromises ended up in the Constitution.  The ones who hated slavery compromised with slave owners who wanted to have the right to slavery in all the states.  Compromise requires schmoozing.

Which again does not compare to today. We don't have compromise, we have capitulation for the sake of 'maintaining dignity'. The last real compromise we've had with a Democrat president is when Clinton signed the welfare law in the 90's.

Maybe.  But a Senator doesn't get anything he wants unless he can schmooze at least 50 of his fellow Senators into going along with him, and that always involves the backslappy stuff.  It's the same reason why so many business deals get made on golf courses.

And the same goes for Presidents.

You just described every other Monday with Donald Trump, who's mastered golf for just such business and social occasions, and who schmoozes like nobody's business.
