World Series - KC ROYALS vs NY METS con't [Game 5] KC up 3-1
« on: October 27, 2015, 07:55:45 pm »
It's Matt Harvey  http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/31214 vs. Edison Volquez   http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/6401

Matt Harvey is the perfect player for New York. First, he’s good; that’s important. New Yorkers don’t put up with failure very well. Then there’s the personality, the chip on his shoulder going back to his draft status coming out of high school, the raw power of his electric stuff and the attitude that New Yorkers love, just enough on this side of cocky. So New York Mets fans loved him. And then they didn’t. One fan called him the worst Met ever.

Luckily, New Yorkers also are quick to forgive, and early September, when the whole innings-limit debate for Harvey reached a heated crescendo, now seems very long ago. "He was put in a real tough situation," manager Terry Collins said Monday. "I don’t know if it was handled perhaps the right way, but I know this guy well enough to know he wants the baseball."

Indeed, Harvey is Collins’ choice to start the World Series opener, viewed as a bit of a surprise given the sweep of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series allows Collins to go with any of his trio of power-armed right-handers, and Jacob deGrom has pitched so well in three postseason starts. But maybe the decision to start Harvey is a subtle message: This still is your pitching staff to lead.

Harvey will take on Kansas City Royals veteran Edinson Volquez. Let’s examine the two starters a little closer.

Matt Harvey

You’ve seen or heard the numbers by now: The Royals are good fastball hitters. Against fastballs of 94-plus mph in 2015, they led the majors in wOBA, hitting .307 compared to the MLB average of .249. They had a strikeout rate of just 11.4 percent against those fastballs, nearly 6 percent lower than the No. 2 team and well below the MLB average of 21.9 percent.

The Mets know this. Harvey knows this. "I think the biggest thing that I’ve learned, especially this year, is pitching and mixing different pitches and different locations, whereas before I’ve gotten away with just blowing it out, throwing 97, 98," Harvey said Monday. "Maybe between the long year and having surgery I think I might have lost a little bit of the -- I don’t know how they say it -- but effective velocity."

There is nothing better than the World Series.  Screw the Super Bowl.

THIS is the Championship of Sports.  Right here.

This is one of great game 1's I've seen...it appears bullpen management is going to be important right from the start.

Teams well-matched.  How is KC's bullpen holding up?  Not much rest for either pitching roster for Game 2.   How can you manage when you run out of closers?

Closers have to be ready to go every day.  Middle-inning relief might get tested if this game goes further.

Morales will be in next and they'll hope he can get through an inning.  They may have to bring in Young (game 4 starter) if this keeps going.

This game maybe in record territory.

Fox News just broadcast an incorrect stat.

The longest World Series game was 14 innings.
In 1916 and 2005.

The longest Game 1 is 12.

This is now the longest game 1 and tied for longest WS game. And it looks like KC is going to get it.

Escobar scores the first and last runs, Hosmer makes the error that gives the Mets their fourth run, then knocks in the winner. And 6'10" Young, of all people, goes 3 almost perfect for the win.  The Royals have some legends building.

How about Johnny Cueto?  Two hits and he goes into the 8th innning.

I'm revising my prediction:  KC in 5.  They'll let the Mets take one in NY.

Royals 7-1 over the Mets.

Cueto pitches a complete game, first by an American League pitcher since 1967.

Mets are showing nothing in two games. If they lose Friday, it's a sweep on Saturday.

They beat both of their two best...the Mets are in a must win situation with a rookie starting.  They really had to get one of the first two and didn't.

METS' Conforto pulls one 6 feet fair into RF upper deck for 1-0 lead in bottom of 3rd.

METS' Flores scores from 3rd on SAC FLY to make it 2-0 bottom of 3rd.

Matz is again showing that KC has trouble hitting lefties, they need to work his pitch counts up (but I suspect if that happened we'd just see Niese in relief).

Well, well. The walks kill the Mets.  Clifford gives up two walks, Familia (the closer) comes in and gives up a hit and Murphy commits an error and two runs score. Another hit, another run.

KC takes advantage of mistakes, and the Mets' backs are against the wall.

KC in 5.

You meant Tyler Clippard, Sink!   The NATS traded him to the Oakland A's who gave up on him and traded him to the METS.

Can't pitch on a world stage.

ROYALS up 3 games to 1.

A pall settles over CitiField as Wade Davis whiffs David Wright.

The memory of Syndegaard's knockdown of Escobar fades as the Royals get the best possible revenge: put the Mets on the verge of elimination.

Duda hits into a double play and KC wins it.

Clippard, Clifford.  Who cares?  He'll fade into obscurity after this pitiful series.

KC capitalized on every mistake the Mets made tonight.  Cespedes is the Mets' savior, then he gets caught off first base on a routine line drive to third.

Blew their shaky bullpen away - Reed was torched - in the 12th, eventually the Mets ran out of pitchers. Poor Collins will have to answer questions about letting Harvey talk him into going out in the ninth forever.

I'm just glad our Royals won the World Series. Today was a good day for Missouri the Rams and Chiefs won too. I also enjoyed the Bronco game they played a great game. I think Nov 29th they play the Patriots on NBC Sunday night. That should be a great game to watch. I like both teams. Baseball is very boring though compared to football it is just to long with not a lot of action but I do watch baseball just can get a bit boring at times.
