Hurricanes ALWAYS weaken over land, even moreso over mountainous land. Any meteorologist worth his or her weight saw this scenario coming.

Besides, I have an inkling suspicion.that the actual figures for this storm at its peak were probably inflated to get the "biggest hurricane ever" storyline so they could tie it to global warming.

I agree with your suspicion.  They're desperately trying to keep their propaganda going, and Patricia was a natural place to use the hyperbolic language that makes the gullible ones continue to fall for the climate change lie.

I thought that as well. Hype. I bet they were hopping it was a cat 5 over land to help with their agenda.

My in-laws condominium in Puerto Vallarta reports the following:

"We like to inform you that at Paradise Village Beach Resort and Spa, after the event occurred due to Hurricane Patricia, gladly we can say that our hotel as well all our facilities are 100% operational, and we did not suffer any physical damage and there was not any issue with our guest members or employees. All the activities and outlets are working as usual" .

Even though this storm hit far closer to Puerto Vallarta proper than the last one, a cat 5 in 2002, the city suffered far more extensive damage in 2002, most of it from storm surge. Their hotel's ground floor was flooded in 2002.    For those hoping the "largest hurricane ever recorded" would be the worst natural disaster ever recorded, got a real dud.
