They really want to force Windows 10 down our throats.

Microsoft has a goal of bringing Windows 10 on a total of 1 billion devices by 2017, and in order to achieve this, the company knows that most, if not all of those on Windows 7 need to upgrade as soon as possible. So to do this, Microsoft offered some patches prompting users to upgrade, and it turns out that the company has recently re-released these to make sure that, even if Windows 7 consumers blocked them, they still show up on their computers. Woody Leonhard of InfoWorld writes that a total of six patches have been re-released, and these include not only updates that are supposed to encourage the upgrade to Windows 10 but also bulletins that were previously used to enable data collection on Windows 7.

Dexter:

I have Windows 7 on a Toshiba laptop.  Sporadically, Windows will shut down my OS and initiate updates whether I want them or not.  I Do NOT want Windows 10.  Is there any way to recognize these "patches", or to block them?  Or should I give up and get a Mac?

To avoid this problem you need to turn off automatic updates. Click start, type "Windows update" in the search box, and then click Windows update in the programs list. In the left pane you should see a "change settings" option. After clicking on that you should see this:

I have my important updates set to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them." I also have both boxes unchecked.

You're welcome. If you want to get rid of that annoying "Get Windows 10!" icon on your task bar you'll have to remove the update that added it to your computer. Microsoft didn't include a way to make it go away for people that don't want Windows 10. Removing the update won't remove anything crucial from your computer. It's all related to Windows 10.

To remove the update just open up Windows update and click “Installed Updates” in the bottom-left corner.

"KB3035583" is the name of the update you want to uninstall. You can sort the updates by name to easily find the one you're looking for. Once you’ve located it just click and choose “Uninstall”. You'll have to restart your computer after doing that.

Good info!

right now I'm a little happy my trusty ol' notebook is still running on Vista (never thought I'd hear that coming out of my mouth).  Win7 is ugly.  Win8/8.1 is plug-ugly, and I have no doubt that Win10 will follow the crowd.
