'Super blood moon' to give stargazers a rare show
« on: September 24, 2015, 01:28:56 am »
Yeah, well, it really ought be impressive but as I understand it, it is also a harbinger of the end of the world, so in that regard it has a downside.

"Paris (AFP) - For the first time in decades, skygazers are in for the double spectacle on Monday of a swollen "supermoon" bathed in the blood-red light of a total eclipse.

The celestial show, visible from the Americas, Europe, Africa, west Asia and the east Pacific, will be the result of the Sun, Earth and a larger-than-life, extra-bright Moon lining up for just over an hour from 0211 GMT.

"It will be quite exciting and especially dramatic," predicted astronomer Sam Lindsay of the Royal Astronomical Society in London.

"It'll be brighter than usual, bigger than usual."

The Moon will be at its closest orbital point to Earth, called perigee, while also in its brightest phase.

The resulting "supermoon" will look 30 percent brighter and 14 times larger than when at apogee, the farthest point -- which is about 49,800 kilometres (31,000 miles) from perigee.

Unusually, our planet will take position in a straight line between the Moon and the Sun, blotting out the direct sunlight that usually makes our satellite glow whitish-yellow.

But some light will still creep around Earth's edges and be filtered through its atmosphere, casting an eerie red light that creates the "blood moon". "

I'm hoping to see it Sunday evening and will set up the camera, just in case.

If I were a betting person, I would bet that my area will be cloudy.  It always is when we have an interesting astronomical event.

Got about 40 minutes to go to total eclipse here. Already looks good and the sky is totally clear!

I'm really bummed. I had my camera all set up only for it to get very overcast here.

I always forget to look.

I set my alarm. This may be my last chance to see such a spectacular sight. Gee, what a depressing thought.

Darn. Huge cloud sitting over Staten Island. Though it's possible it could move past by 10:11, time it's expected to total.

I have no luck. Overcast hanging almost exactly to the contours of the island. Trying a drive to south beach, five minutes away. See if that helps.

Fortune smiled upon you. I have no luck at all. Checked the cloud setting on my weather app. It's as if the clouds were cut to form the shape of Staten Island.  **nononono*

Clouds have cleared enough to see it. Not quite peaked yet.

I watched some of it. It started off crystal clear. Clouds were intermittent during the peak eclipse (thus it wasn't clear enough to get a good picture and it was barely visible) but I was able to see it.

I've seen these things before. Yeah, it was a little bigger, but that was about the only difference.

Never saw a thing. We had been enjoying crystal clear night skies until last night, when I couldn't see the moon at all - and then it started raining. Oh well, there's always 2033!  :pondering:

Lunar eclipses aren't like solar eclipses where totality comes in a moment and only lasts a couple of minutes.

Totality for last night's supermoon lunar eclipse lasted for over an hour...

Saw the beginning and the end. Not the red. Ugh. didn't wake up in time. Funny usually cloudy for these events here.
