By Charlotte Triggs AND Alicia C. Dennis

In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, Josh Duggar, his wife Anna, and his parents Jim Bob and Michelle are speaking out in response to reports that Josh was once accused of molesting five underage girls as a teen.

"Twelve years ago, as a young teenager, I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret. I hurt others, including my family and close friends," Josh, 27, tells PEOPLE in a statement. "I confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation. We spoke with the authorities where I confessed my wrongdoing, and my parents arranged for me and those affected by my actions to receive counseling. I understood that if I continued down this wrong road that I would end up ruining my life."

Josh has resigned from his position at the Family Research Council as a result of the accusations becoming public, but his family has stood behind him.

"Back 12 years ago our family went through one of the most difficult times of our lives," Jim Bob, 49, and Michelle, 48, said in a joint statement. "When Josh was a young teenager, he made some very bad mistakes, and we were shocked. We had tried to teach him right from wrong. That dark and difficult time caused us to seek God like never before."

Their statement continues, "Even though we would never choose to go through something so terrible, each one of our family members drew closer to God. We pray that as people watch our lives they see that we are not a perfect family. We have challenges and struggles every day. It is one of the reasons we treasure our faith so much because God's kindness and goodness and forgiveness are extended to us – even though we are so undeserving. We hope somehow the story of our journey – the good times and the difficult times – cause you to see the kindness of God and learn that He can bring you through anything."

And Josh's wife Anna, 26, says she has remained supportive of her husband – even after he confessed his "past teenage mistakes" two years before he proposed marriage.

"I can imagine the shock many of you are going through reading this. I remember feeling that same shock," she says. "When my family and I first visited the Duggar home, Josh shared his past teenage mistakes. I was surprised at his openness and humility and at the same time didn't know why he was sharing it. For Josh, he wanted not just me but my parents to know who he really was – even every difficult past mistakes."

But Anna said she had confidence that the counseling her husband received "changed his life."

"He continued to do what he was taught. [I know] who Josh really is – someone who had gone down a wrong path and had humbled himself before God and those whom he had offended," she says. "Someone who had received the help needed to change the direction of his life and do what is right."

And for his part, Josh says he continues living with regret.

"I would do anything to go back to those teen years and take different actions," says Josh. "I sought forgiveness from those I had wronged and asked Christ to forgive me and come into my life. In my life today, I am so very thankful for God's grace, mercy and redemption."

This is why you do not shelter your children.

They will find out wrong no matter how much you try to hide it. Parents must teach their children how to recognize evil and how to confront it.

I have never been comfortable with the Duggars' "no this, no that, no anything" approach to raising their children.

Seems to be not very long ago, when Dr.  Dobson's protégée Rev. Ted  Haggard, was out spreading their evangelism and family values.

Now this. They sure know how to pick them !!

Just statistically speaking, when you have - how many children do they have - twenty-some?  When you have that many children, you're bound to have one or more with problems.  That's just the odds.

I don't know what causes that kind of behaviour.  I hope he really is healed, what a terrible thing to have to live with and always be with you.

At last count, the Duggars had 19.

He was 17 years old at the time. They didn't say who the minors were in this case, although the implication was that at least one was close to his age. Given Jim Bob's extremely strict (arguably repressive) rule set and the fact that Josh wasn't prosecuted, I suspect that the actual deeds were more minor than what is being implied and that there is some exaggeration going on.

Thanks for the info Myrle.  The article did make me think that the girls were pretty young.  If he was seventeen, and the girls were fifteen or so - heck - half the boys in my high school class...

Still, it is surprising, considering how strictly they were raised.  Although my father was a church deacon and I hung around other deacon's and preacher's kids - we were a pretty wild bunch!

That would make him fifteen at the time of the reported incidents.

Putting aside these revelations for a sec....The left has been after the Duggars for years ...especially since they campaign and support Christian candidates...Josh moved to DC to work for the Family Research Council and was to work on the Huckabee campaign along with the rest of the family....so that leaves me to ask...who released this info?....apparently TLC knew about Josh and kept it quiet for their ratings..but someone had other reasons to bring Josh, all the Duggars and maybe even TLC down...

Yes. You're probably right.

But the individuals who released this info were the Duggars themselves. They were, after all, the ones who took Josh to the "authorities" to "confess" his "wrongdoing" and right there is where my natural inclination for skepticism kicked in big time.

The title of this article says that Josh engaged in child molestation. He was never "accused" of it as far as I can read here, he willingly confessed to it, yet there were no charges brought up.

No one, not even a 15 year-old good kid, is going to get away with telling the "authorities" that he's molested several ("... those affected by my actions...") children and get away unscathed, where those children were very young (8 - 12) so what I think we're talking about here is Josh, as a 15 year-old boy, engaging in what we have come to accept as a normal level of teenage sexual activities with girls of his age or very close to his age.

In Jim Bob's and Michelle's minds, any form of sexual contact outside of marriage is wrong (including kissing and hand holding), and certainly any sexual contact before you're old enough is molestation.

Everyone has a right to live life according to their personal beliefs and to raise their kids accordingly, but in this case violating the Duggar's draconian strictness is probably the only thing Josh is really guilty of.

TLC Pulls '19 Kids and Counting' Amid Molestation Revelations
Friday, May 22, 2015 03:36 PM

By: Cynthia Littleton

TLC has pulled episodes of its reality hit "19 Kids and Counting" on the heels of revelations that the family's oldest son was accused of molesting five underage girls 12 years ago when he was a teenager.

Reps for TLC would not comment but a source confirmed the series was off the schedule for the foreseeable future. Word of the allegations against Josh Duggar, now 27 and married with children of his own, surfaced earlier this week. The Arkansas-based family issued a lengthy statement to People magazine on Thursday acknowledging the past incidents.

"Twelve years ago, as a young teenager, I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret. I hurt others, including my family and close friends," Duggar said in a statement to People. "I confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation. We spoke with the authorities where I confessed my wrongdoing, and my parents arranged for me and those affected by my actions to receive counseling. I understood that if I continued down this wrong road that I would end up ruining my life."

The fact that the incidents apparently came to the attention of law enforcement officials raises questions about whether TLC or Discovery Communications executives were aware of Josh Duggar's past when the series about the expansive Duggar clan was greenlighted in 2008 after the family was featured in a series of specials. It's unclear if charges were ever filed against Josh Duggar.

The hasty shelving of the show echoes the situation last year that forced TLC to cancel another successful docu series, "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo," after the matriarch of the series was accused of dating a man who had been convicted on child molestation charges.

The show, which bowed as "17 Kids and Counting," revolves around the extended family of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, parents of Josh, who also issued a statement to People.

"Back 12 years ago our family went through one of the most difficult times of our lives," the pair said in a statement. "When Josh was a young teenager, he made some very bad mistakes, and we were shocked. We had tried to teach him right from wrong. That dark and difficult time caused us to seek God like never before."

"19 Kids" has a been a staple of TLC's schedule and a source of numerous specials as the older kids in the clan grow up and have children of their own. TLC most recently scored with the May 5 two-hour special featuring the birth of another grandchild for Jim Bob and Michelle.

I'm amazed this story has not been posted already but a diligent search indicates otherwise. In any case, here 'tis.

TLC pulled the reality series "19 Kids and Counting" from its schedule on Friday, a move that follows reports of sexual misconduct allegations against one of the stars, Josh Duggar, stemming from when he was a juvenile.

In a statement, the channel said it was "deeply saddened and troubled by this heartbreaking situation, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and victims at this difficult time." The statement didn't elaborate.

[snip]

TLC didn't address whether its popular show would return. The program had been set to air in reruns after wrapping its most recent season.

The cancellation is being compared to the similar treatment of Here Comes Honey Booboo last year. I wish the Duggars well. It's a sad time for everyone involved.

Yes, the gay activists are crowing about this, for some reason (as if someone else's improper behavior somehow justifies their behavior).

It's because Josh had the audacity to speak out against them. Duggar was on the board of the FRC, probably the most prominent opponents of the homosexual agenda. So, to those people, he must be smeared. Already the phrase "child molester" is being tossed about as if he's some sort of pedophile. That is clearly not what happened here.

I am amazed they pulled the show since Josh is just one person not the whole show at all. Why is everyone punished for the actions of one of them when a minor he was never charged according to the police report so why was this information ever released?. I will never watch TLC again most of the shows are stupid this was one I actually enjoyed and they are few and far between anymore. This is the only reality show I watched and as for most tv I watch reruns of old shows soon I will get rid of cable since it is just a lot of channels with crap on them. I can watch reruns on my computer.

The homosexual activists had targeted him as an enemy. There's been a wave of "outings" as of late.

As for cable, unless you watch sports (which I do), it's really not worth the money. If at all possible, find an ISP that isn't connected with your local cable company.

He is a child molester and pedophile by any definition I can think of. The idea you think he is not, it stunning.

You have illustrated the problem, perhaps without intending to do so, or even recognizing doing so.

Bill Gothard is the guru of the Duggan family, and he is also a disgraced sexual predator.

"On February 27, 2014 the Board of Directors of the Institute in Basic Life Principles placed Gothard on indefinite administrative leave while it investigated claims that he sexually harassed and molested several female employees.[31] The claims had been publicized on Recovering Grace, a website and support group for former followers of Gothard's teachings.[32] As many as 34 women who worked for Gothard claim that he harassed them; four claim that he molested them,[1] and one of the accusers claims that Gothard molested her when she was 16 years old.[33]

On March 6, 2014—a week after the investigation started—Gothard announced his immediate resignation as president of the IBLP. According to ATI administrative director David Waller, Gothard felt compelled to resign in order to comply with a directive in the Gospel of Matthew to "go and be reconciled" if "your brother or sister has something against you."[34]

On June 17, 2014 IBLP issued a statement,[35] summarizing the investigation conducted by "outside legal counsel". In it they noted that although no criminal activity was uncovered, Bill Gothard had acted in an "inappropriate manner" so "is not permitted to serve in any counseling, leadership, or Board role within the IBLP ministry"."

Watching the religious right tie itself into knots, making excuses for the inexcusable reinforces my own dislike of their practice of telling others what is moral, how to live their lives, passing harsh judgments, etc.

After Rev. Ted Haggard, it is amazing that Family Research, Perkins, Dobson would make such an horrific mistakes again.

When I hear them pontificating, it makes me question just who in Sam Hell they think they are, and just what gives them justification, authority beyond their own Audacity?

Do you think you are doing the exact same thing, especially that last part about "judgments"?

I don't think there is anyone on here who isn't dismayed by these revelations, but I also know we are taking into account Josh's sincere admission of guilt and sorrow; the fact this happened 12 years ago and apparently has not been repeated since; that the antiGod claque, especially the homos, has been gunning for the Duggars for years and is exploiting this scandal for all its worth and perhaps for more than its worth; and there are a number of other shows on TV which push the moral boundaries (to put it mildly) or have in its cast characters of dubious moral character and only we close minded, judgmental, mean-spirited Christians ever make a fuss about that.

So perhaps we are a more tolerant of Josh than you think is warranted, but it's possible you are too condemnatory based on the overall story.

Btw, none of the Duggans, none, is guilty of anything Gothard may or may not have done, even if they accepted his theological concepts. His sins are not theirs.

p.s. I am curious as to whether you think The Master was telling the woman taken in adultery how to live her life and what is moral when He told her, "Go, and sin no more"?

I have always thought of the Duggars as a freakish circus sideshow, famous and popular because mom and pop piled out 19 kids.

Statistically, somebody in that brood was bound to have done something.  Like Luis says, it appears to me Josh was just screwing around like some 15 year olds do. He is no way a pedophile, just was a hormone-addled teenager.

Duggars pere were OK financially before TLC and will probably be OK without TLC.  I always flip the channel when FOX and Friends bring them on.  In fact, I'm flipping FOX and Friends more and more these days, what with their endless stories about military people in various situations, non-stop Huckabee coverage and almost every day brings some child on with their version of the National Anthem.  I want news in the morning, so I'm turning more and more to CNN.
