After a national clamor to release the film despite threats, Sony finds a way to get the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy out there

Sony Pictures is set to release the canceled Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy “The Interview” in theaters and on video on demand, TheWrap has learned.

The plan is to release the film simultaneously in participating theaters and via video on demand. The Plaza Theater in Atlanta, the MX Theaters in St. Louis and the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin have now said they will distribute the film. The MX said it would be selling tickets as of 2 p.m Tuesday.

The release will likely be in the 200-theater range; exhibitors typically cap the rollout of films that offer day-and-date VOD at around 300 sites, because it usually cuts attendance significantly.

JAMES FRANCO THANKS OBAMA FOR SAVING ‘THE INTERVIEW’

by CHARLIE SPIERING23 Dec 20140
After a long hiatus on social media, the two comedy celebrities featured in the controversial movie The Interview celebrated Sony’s decision to release the film on Christmas as originally planned.

“The people have spoken! Freedom has prevailed! Sony didn’t give up!,” Rogen wrote on Twitter. “The Interview will be shown at theaters willing to play it on Xmas day!”

Actor James Franco praised the president for speaking out against Sony’s decision to pull the movie.

“CELEBRATING!!!!!,” he wrote on Instagram.

“VICTORY!!!!!!! The PEOPLE and THE PRESIDENT have spoken!!! SONY to release THE INTERVIEW in theaters,” he also wrote on Twitter.

Franco also ribbed the president for flubbing his name, calling him “James Flacco” during a press conference.

“’The Interview’ starring Seth Rogen and James Flacco saved by President Obacco! I MEAN PRESIDENT OBAMA!!!!! Sorry!!!” he wrote.
