A majority of respondents approve of the federal government’s response to Ebola, according to a new CNN/ORC poll.
Fifty-four percent of those surveyed said the government has done a “good job” of both treating infected patients as well as preventing others from catching the virus. More than 70 percent are confident that the government could prevent a nationwide epidemic.
The poll also showed voters will have Ebola on their minds when they go to the polls next week.
Thirty-six percent said that the government’s response to Ebola will be “extremely important” to their vote for Congress in November. That’s below issues like the economy, terrorism and healthcare, but ranks higher than illegal immigration and foreign affairs.
While the virus is a concern, it’s not a personal concern to most. Eighty-one percent believe it's likely that someone in the country will be infected over the next few weeks, but only 26 percent believe someone in their community will contract the virus.
“Most Americans seem to recognize that they are not in personal jeopardy themselves,” CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said. “In fact, the vast majority of Americans probably don't know anyone who has ever been to West Africa.”
