Lindsey Graham: It May Be Time to Work with Iran Against ISIS

A Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee says Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki cannot keep his country together, and a U.S. alliance with Iran might be needed to do so.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said Sunday a U.S. partnership with longtime foe Iran makes him uncomfortable but likened it to the United States working with Josef Stalin in World War II against Adolf Hitler. He says the United States has to do what it can to keep Baghdad from falling to insurgents.

"We should have discussions with Iran to make sure they don't use this as an opportunity to seize control of parts of Iraq," Graham said. "They're in this. They're already on the ground. We need to put a red line with Iran."

Asked how, Graham replied, "You just sit down and talk with them."

Graham's stance appeared to surprise CNN interviewers Gloria Borger and Dana Bash. They even asked Graham say it again.

"I'm sorry, it's sort of hard for me to believe that I'm hearing a Republican say, 'Sit down and talk with Iran,'" Bash said.

"Do you realize what's happening?" Graham replied. "If Baghdad falls and the central government collapses in Iraq, the Iranians are the biggest winner. We're the biggest loser."

An al-Qaida splinter group surprised Western intelligence organizations last week and took control of major Iraqi cities. Iran says it has no interest in a destabilized Iraq as its neighbor.

Graham spoke to CNN's "State of the Union" and CBS' "Face the Nation."

Oh sure.  Nothing Iran would like to do more than go slaughter a bunch of Sunnis.

How long will Saudi Arabia sit silent while that happens??

There is nothing "tenuous" about that vital part of WWII history.

Roosevelt, Churchill and Eisenhower got the USSR to shed most of the blood in Europe, for instance. That is hardly tenuous.

Having done so they justifiably shared in the spoils.

Who is to say that Iran isn't on ISIS's side?

We talk so much about the Russian empire that we seem to forget that Persia was once an empire, too.

Wait a minute.  Is not this the same senator who advocated we fund the rebel movement in Syria?  I guess he doesn't know that the Syrian rebels and ISIS are the same.  Or maybe he thinks the American people are too stupid to see that ISIS is at least in part the creation of our own CIA.  The support we give them in Syria goes to their eastern front in Iraq.

The people of the world must think we are the biggest fools on earth.

What makes the analogy tenuous is that our relationship with the USSR pre-WWII is nothing like our relationship with Iran in the past 10-20 years.

I noticed a lot of American made  ARs in the hands of the ISIS executioners. Follow the trail of where they got those, and it leads right to D.C.

Kind of like the way Obama armed the Syrian Islamoterrorist "insurgents."
