A shooter fatally shot one student at a suburban Portland, Oregon, high school Tuesday morning, authorities said. The gunman is also dead.

Police said the situation at Reynolds High School in Troutdale was "stabilized" an hour after initial calls came in at 8:07 a.m. PT (11:07 a.m. ET).

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office didn't immediately say if there were victims or the extent of any injuries.

A number of emergency vehicles surrounded the school, and the facility was placed on lockdown. Once secure, SWAT teams moved from room to room to take students out safely, reported NBC affiliate KGW.

It could take police up to two hours to clear the school and get parents reunited with their children, according to the Reynolds School District.

Troutdale Mayor Doug Dauoust said reports of gunfire were called in as the teachers and students were arriving to start the school day. He told MSNBC there were no known injuries at the time.

Students have final exams Tuesday and Wednesday, the last days of the school year, and some had yet to arrive to school for the morning.

Troutdale is a suburb of about 16,000 people east of Portland on the banks of the Columbia River. Reynolds High is one of the state's largest, with more than 2,800 students.

I favor holding parents and guardians of minors (under age 18) fully accountable both criminally and civilly.

I don't suggest it will solve things, but it may put more emphasis on parents' responsibilities.

Your son guns down another Chicago thug, you go to jail.

Your son guns down some Colorado or Oregon school mates, you go to jail.

Or maybe stretch the age upward, to like 26 since they may be on your insurance.

We sort of tried that here, for school attendance (the idea was to start small). It hit the usual problem - most parents who don't give a crap and are not invested in their kids tend to have more than one child. Send the parent to prison - who looks after the kids? That particular law died a rapid death.

Almost none of those kids have fathers who are alive and not in jail already - assuming they even know who their father is. Some do have mothers around, but if the kid is over 12 or 14, she hasn't seen much of him.

If we could find some way for kids to have parents in the first place, it would solve a lot of the crime problem.

Almost, if not all of these school shooters have the same things in common.

- Under psychiatric care, on some kind of psychiatric drug(s), and/or was known to be dangerous (online activity, evidence found in his room by family, etc.) and no one said a word.

- Parents are registered Democrats

- Obsessed with violence of one kind or another

- Loner who sees the world as against him so he has to feel tough by getting a gun

- Little if any parental guidance (see #2) and a good probability no father around

We are raising a generation of hedonistic sociopaths who do not care if what they do is wrong. They've been taught that everything is permissible, nothing is right or wrong, and have been fed a diet of this liberal mantra for decades along with an endless stream of violence coming out of Hollywood. So, when you have been taught that nothing is wrong, everything is permissible, and violence is always the answer, the inevitable result is going to be violence.

Spot on. They seem to always leave the same warning signs that they are a lose canon - yet nobody acts on it or because of bureaucracy they can't.   By the way, I drove down to Troutdale this morning to visit a supplier, and we could hear all the sirens going to the school only 2 miles away. At that early in the morning we didn't know the details of the shooting, all we knew is the school had a shooter. Pretty freaky.

A physical education teacher injured in Tuesday's shooting at Reynolds High School saved lives by rushing to the main office and initiating a lockdown procedure, Troutdale Police said.

The yet-to-be-identified gunman shot PE teacher Todd Rispler and a 14-year-old student before reportedly committing suicide. Freshman Emilio Hoffman didn't survive the attack, but Rispler was able to escape since the bullet only grazed his hip.

On Tuesday afternoon, Troutdale Police Chief Scott Anderson held a press conference in which he detailed the timeline of events during the shooting, thanking Rispler for his quick actions that saved lives. ...
