You’re being awfully presumptuous though, and somewhat blasphemous, by assuming that only those who talk publicly to God are believers, and the rest of us are atheists.
Didn’t Jesus demonstrate against the Pharisees for their all-too-public demonstrations of just how God-believing they were.
He didn't say publicly. He said talk to God, i.e. prayer, a central tenet not only of Christianity, but almost all religions.
Under his assertion, only those who either believe there is no God (atheists), or may or may not believe there is a God but do not pray to Him (deists, agnostics), will fit his litmus test for a politician.
It is not a sin to preach the Gospel publicly. It is a sin to misuse the Gospel to promote oneself in public, the way certain crooked televangelists do on TV (and as it happens I was watching one such crook trying to part thousand-dollar "seed offerings" from the poor and suffering this morning, and it was hilarious). There is a difference.
