Can you really still have someone committed to a mental institution unwillingly if they haven't been convicted of a crime?
Asking for a friend.
@AbaraXas

If a mental health worker thinks the patient is a danger to him/her self or others, the mental health worker can go to a judge to get a commitment order.  The judge will decide one way or another.

In California such an order is for a maximum of 72 hours.

Yes, there is a time limit and that time is used for an extensive mental health evaluation.  After that, the judge can keep the patient there for another amount of time if the patient is still a danger.

Hi Victoria;

In Italy the shrinks got B Slapped by their Govt. over locking people up and slapping them with a lifetime disability label over their 'Dangerousness'.

The Italian Govt told them that locking people up based on a determination of 'Dangerousness' was the job of the Police, not medical quacks.

The fact Imam Obama was never hospitalized for narcissism proves it isn't a committable mental illness.
Yeah, but what if all the people responsible for deciding who goes to the loony bin or not are themselves all tetched?

Not quite.

The time allowed can be extended at the discretion of the quacks working there.

The real determinate as to time served is Insurance Coverage.

The more gold they can dig out of the mark the longer they keep the mark.
