Sadly,the service academies have become nothing more than a diploma mill for the politically correct,who go on to unjustified promotions and end up with stars on their shoulders and making political decisions.
Major General Donahue is the lastest example of one of these snakes that just raised his head.
Check out his bio,and you will see that he was always given assignments geared towards becoming a General officer,and was not in any unit in combat until he was made a staff officer. His CIB is bogus. Yeah,he seems to have spent most of his career in Special Operations,but it was ALWAYS as a staff officer until he became a General Officer.
I have no freaking idea how he got 4 awards of a Bronze Star for Valor,but I can assure you he didn't earn them any more than Colon Powell "earned" HIS Bronze Star for Valor and CIB for "rescueing the crew of a helicopter he was a passenger in that was shot down in VN". The helicopter was NOT shot down. It crashed due to a mechanical failure,and all he did was help provide first aid to a couple of the crew members who were injured in the crasah. At NO time were they under fire.
And this just ain't just Donahue or the army. ALL branches of the military have been infiltrated by these "perfumed princes" who have had the skids greased their whole careers so they could obtain stars while taking the least amount of risk and going to all the career advancement schools.
Sadly,if you want to find a GOOD and honest career infantry officer,he will be a Colonel or lower. One reason why this is true is that it is practically impossible these days for ANY officer to gain flag rank without having graduated from one of the career officer schools like West Point.
Our military is now an institution ran by the "Good Old Boys" from politically connected families. THEY are the ones making the decisions,and THIS is why we never seem to win any wars anymore.
