18th Airborne orders soldiers on staff duty to get 4 hours of sleep
Sleep deprivation for service members is a recurring issue for the military.
By Riley Ceder

The 18th Airborne Corps published a memo over the weekend that says soldiers on staff duty have to sleep for at least four consecutive hours.

The memo lays out the logistics for who’s in charge of making sure soldiers clock out to take their slumber and explicitly states that units can’t hold soldiers past their shift to sleep. Typically, during staff duty, soldiers man the front desk and conduct checks of unit headquarters within their unit’s area of operation.

Maj. David Nixon, an operations officer for the 18th Airborne Corps, recommended the sleep guidelines as part of his field officer of the day duties, according to Capt. Victoria Horn, an Army spokesperson. The duties require him to identify issues and recommend solutions.

Judgment Day: Democrats bank on abortion to carry Biden as GOP adjusts strategy

Election Day is less than six months away, and voters have a familiar choice of Joe Biden and Donald Trump. Unless it’s The Godfather Part II, sequels rarely live up to the hype. Although it may look like a 2020 repeat, the stars are competing in a different game and under different rules. This series, ‘Judgment Day: Why 2024 rematch won’t be any old sequel, investigates the key differences from 2020. Part Three is on the first presidential election post Roe v. Wade reversal.

Less than six months until the November election, Democrats are counting on women, infuriated over the Supreme Court striking down the landmark Roe v. Wade case, to save them once again.

Lingering anger over the loss of abortion rights two years ago has led to Democratic victories in multiple elections despite a host of issues threatening the party, including rising grocery and gas prices, protests against the Israel-Hamas war, and growing disapproval of President Joe Biden.

After stinging defeats in the 2022 midterm elections and numerous state-level ballot measures, Republicans, led by former President Donald Trump, have sought to find a middle ground on abortion by allowing states to decide restrictions without federal interference.

Gaza aid pier mission involving US troops is off to a chaotic start
By Geoff Ziezulewicz and The Associated Press
 May 21, 2024, 06:06 PM

Editor’s note: This story was updated May 21 8:26 p.m. E.T. to include further comment from Pentagon and U.N. officials.

An effort involving the U.S. military to surge much-needed humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip is off to a chaotic start, with aid trucks being overrun and at least one person feared dead over the weekend, prompting a pause in aid distribution.

U.S. soldiers and sailors built a floating pier off Gaza and stabbed it into a Gaza beach on Friday with the help of Israeli forces.

The plan, announced by President Biden in his State of the Union address and using a capability known as Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore, or JLOTS, has been touted as another way to get food to Gazans caught between the Israeli military and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which attacked Israel on Oct. 7.

First gentleman Emhoff: Trump a ‘known antisemite’
by Alex Gangitano - 05/22/24 8:56 AM ET

Second gentleman Doug Emhoff called former President Trump a “known antisemite,” piling on the criticism of the former president after he shared a video on social media referencing a “unified Reich.”

In a video posted on Tuesday, Emhoff watches a clip of Trump saying, “If Jewish people are going to vote for Joe Biden, they have to have their head examined.”

“The last person I’m going to take advice from as a Jewish person is a known antisemite, who’s had dinner with antisemites, who said there was good people on both sides after Charlottesville. He’s the last person I’m going to take advice from,” the second gentleman said in response.

The Biden campaign has seized on the Trump video, which has been deleted and the Trump campaign blamed on a staffing error, to attack the former GOP president.

Biden’s reelection campaign on Tuesday also shared a video of the president reacting to the video Trump shared on his Truth Social page on Monday night, which featured hypothetical headlines about his potential victory in November, including one that referenced a “unified Reich.”

“This on his official account? Wow,” Biden said in the video. “A unified Reich? That’s Hilter’s language, that’s not America’s. He cares about holding onto power. I care about you.”

Vice President Harris also bashed the video during a speech on Tuesday. The video, which was not created by the Trump campaign, was taken down Tuesday morning.

Except for the past 1,200+ days the Biden administration has absolutely refused to enforce the law, they've pretty much enforced the law.

'Swarm pilots' will need new tactics—and entirely new training methods: Air Force special-ops chief
AFSOC will expand on groundbreaking experiments this summer, Lt. Gen. Bauernfeind says in interview.
PATRICK TUCKER | MAY 10, 2024

TAMPA—Experiments with ever-larger drone swarms are revealing a need for new concepts of operations and new ways of training human operators, the Air Force Special Operations Forces Command says.

In the next few months, AFSOC will expand upon a groundbreaking December experiment that saw a single drone crew guide not one but three MQ-9 Reapers and even to air-launch a smaller Group 2 drone as part of the command’s Adaptive Airborne Enterprise effort. Now, the command aims to repeat the experiment with even more drones—and add the ability to hand off control to troops in the field.

“The hope with the summer now is: how can we start to bring those aspects together and then work with our joint force teammates? And now how do we manage multiple MQ-9s air-launching a small number of” smaller drones, “and then hand that swarm off to a joint force teammate, whether in a terrestrial or maritime situation?” Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind said in an interview at the SOF Week conference here.

California State Rep. Vince Fong (R) won a special election on Tuesday to fill former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R) seat and finish his term, which runs until January.

Fong defeated his opponent, Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux (R) after receiving 39,825 votes, or 60.2 percent. Boudreaux received 26,317 votes, or 39.8 percent, according to election results from the Associated Press (AP).

The AP called the race at 11:17 p.m. on Tuesday.

Fong, who had previously served as a staffer under McCarthy issued a statement saying he was “filled with humility and gratitude” after the election results.

“I am filled with humility and gratitude tonight, as early results show that voters have overwhelmingly selected me to serve as their voice in Washington, D.C.,” Fong said in his statement.

Fong added, “With the campaign over, the real work now begins.”
