Post by: Gefn on September 18, 2022, 05:26:17 pm
San Juan, Puerto Rico, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Tropical storm Fiona gained strength on Saturday as it headed toward Puerto Rico, prompting the National Hurricane Center (NHC) to issue a hurricane warning and alerts for "life threatening floods and mudslides" for the U.S. territory and watches for the U.S. Virgin Islands.

One man was found dead in the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, after heavy rains from the massive storm swept away his house in the Basse-Terre district, according to local authorities. read more

Fiona strengthens into a Category 1 hurricane as storm heads toward Puerto Rico

Quote

CNN) — Fiona has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane, with sustained winds of 80 mph and gusts of up to 100 mph as it churns in the Caribbean about 50 miles south of Puerto Rico, bringing with it the threats of flooding and mudslides, according to the National Hurricane Center's latest update.

The storm's impacts have already been felt: At least one death has been reported in Basse-Terre in the French territory of Guadeloupe, according to the vice president of the territory's environmental agency, who said the capital had been devastated by flooding. And in Puerto Rico, nearly 570,000 customers -- or 40% of the island's total -- were without power as of 12:30 p.m. ET Sunday, according to PowerOutage.us. And the flash flooding has already begun.

Hurricane Fiona makes landfall with 'catastrophic flooding', plunges entirety of Puerto Rico into blackout
The FOX Forecast Center expects Hurricane Fiona to strengthen over the next few days as the eye of the Category 1 hurricane made landfall on the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico Sunday.
By Brian Donegan Source FOX Weather

Hurricane Fiona is continuing to gain strength as the eye of the Category 1 hurricane made landfall along the extreme southwestern coast of Puerto Rico on Sunday. Maximum sustained winds at landfall were estimated to be 85 mph.

Strong winds have been reported across the island, including a 103 mph wind gust reported in the city of Ponce.

And because of the strong wind, Hurricane Fiona is now responsible for causing an island-wide blackout, plunging nearly 1.5 million customers into darkness as the storm spins off the coast.

Where is Joe's response??? Did he not know that a potential hurricane was headed for Puerto Rico?  Instead he irresponsibly takes off for the Queen's funeral. /s

He's a DEM so he'll be seen as Mighty Mouse swooping in to save the day.

Maybe Kamel can scope out the area and make sure that they get the aid that they're going to demand.

Doesn’t look like it will hit the East Coast.

Or AOC, who was screaming and crying for her memaw in PR, when Trump as POTUS.

Strong Cat 1, hits, blacks out the island, and nary a tweet.  What a POS opportunistic bitch.

How does a Category 1 cause that much destruction?

But hey, the Blue Checks are out swooning at Biden for a routine emergency declaration saying "this is how a REAL President leads. Thank you!"

Joe's a democrap resident so no matter what and how little he does he will be deified by the fourth branch of of the democrap government for his incompetence. What I want to now is considering how many billions of US taxpayer dollars were sunk into Puerto Rico's corrupt mayors and government and specifically into their electrical grid...WTF!

I'm pretty sure you know the answer. Winds perhaps not so much, but it depends on the vulnerability and type of structure.  If a structure isn't built to current hurricane codes it may be easily wiped out.  Water is the bigger threat usually especially in low lying areas. If the hurricane brings a lot of water with it or behind it and hits at high tide a Cat 1 can do significant damage.

There have been times where we've seen more damage from a tropical storm than a Cat 1 or 2 hurricane it just depends on the size of the hurricane, how specific it is, and how much storm surge it brings with it.  Tropical storms can linger on for days.

Obviously every storm is different.

Every Cat 1 or greater I have lived through, and that's abut a dozen at this point in my life has caused widespread power outages.
