Beautiful, balmy and sunny in central NE Texas.

And, green!  I've seldom seen it so green.  It almost glows.

We're on the waning end of the wildflower season, but Texas looks kinda like this right now:

Well, the corn is about 3' high, the wheat fields are already turning yellow, and we've had one very good hay cutting so far.

I love NH, but not the 18 months of winter every year.

Once on a summer trip to Canada, a lifeguard said they had just 3 seasons; July, August and Winter

In central Texas the bluebonnets are well past their prime, and have mostly been replaced with large swaths of yellow and orange flowers. Sorry I'm not a wildflower expert, so I have no idea what their names are.  ^-^

I grew up in Northern Michigan (the Upper Peninsula). In my childhood the four seasons were: Spring (6 weeks, mid-April to end of May), Summer (3 months, June-August), Fall (6 weeks, September to mid-October) and Winter (mid-October to mid-April). It usually snowed before Halloween, and it was not uncommon to get snow well into May.

I don't really miss the cold weather.

I would guess that both flowers are different varieties of coreopsis.

My nephew and his wife lived in NH in the early 2000’s, between Concord, Manchester and Portsmouth.  I took a long weekend in late May of 2004 and flew up to visit them. The area, the countryside especially was beautiful and I really loved Portsmouth. We walked all around the town square and had lunch and then went to the Strawbery Banke Museum. I thought, “gee I could see me living here”. But then I learned about the winters. I can’t even deal with the winters in Maryland and Southern PA.  **nononono* ^-^

For the record, it's not my pic.

You may already know this having taken lots of pics, but the secret is the cloud cover.  Direct sunlight creates a sheen on leaves and flower petals that washes out the color.  Bright overcast (not too thick cloud cover) is a natural diffuser, so the light comes from all directions, and makes the best nature images.

I was thinking it was a screen shot, but I guess it's a live image when refreshed.  Anyway....went to buy a new rain gauge today, since the hail pretty well took out mine....none to be had.  I guess everyone is enjoying measuring the rain, for a change...lol.  Beats knocking the dust out of the thing.

A firetruck and ambulance parked out there during the storm, lights on, I don't think they found what they were looking for though.

Water reached the second step of the back porch, it was a lake out there.

Yeah, I'll have 3 days off to try and squeeze it in.

Forecasting rain Saturday and Monday, but it's Texas; so... They rarely get the weather right.  Maybe you'll be able to do the brisket.
Unlimited, we both know how this will work:
If I buy a brisket, it will rain all 3 days.
If I don't, we won't get a drop!

I hope all of our Texas Briefers are safe and dry.  Lots of flooding around here, but it's pretty sparsely populated, so I'm not aware of any serious problems.

Looks like our Memorial Day activities and BBQs are going to need to be in a covered area!  More rain coming.

My jalapenos have managed to thrive in spite of not much sunshine lately.  I'm sitting here having nachos with thin-sliced jalapenos sprinkled liberally over them, and crying and reading the news.  They're so good!

A rough weekend:  http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/texas/article/Floods-in-Texas-Kansas-leave-at-least-6-dead-2-7952740.php#item-38489
Quote
Floods in Texas, Kansas leave at least 6 dead, 2 missing

HOUSTON (AP) — Authorities in central Texas have found two more bodies along flooded streams, bringing the death toll from flooding in the state to six.

It was unclear Sunday whether a body found in Travis County near Austin was one of the two people who had been missing in Texas. An 11-year-old boy was still missing in central Kansas, too.

The latest flooding victim identified by authorities was a woman who died when the car she was riding in was swept from the street by the flooded Cypress Creek about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Kendall County sheriff's Cpl. Reid Daly said.

The car, with three occupants, was in Comfort, about 45 miles north of San Antonio. The driver made it to shore, and a female passenger was rescued from a tree. But Daly said 23-year-old Florida Molima was missing until her body was found around 11 a.m. Sunday about 8 miles downstream. She became the sixth flood-related death in Texas over Memorial Day weekend....

We put in buffalo grass sod when we built our home. The little doggies needed a little yard space. It was a struggle to keep it alive in dry summers but now it is so tall, the little ones who do not like to get their feet wet, balk at going potty in the grass. Too wet to mow at this time. But the green is pretty.

Guadalupe River in flood stage
Access now restricted to guided tours!

http://www.ksat.com/weather/guadalupe-river-in-new-braunfels-to-be-limited-to-guided-raft-trips

excerpted
Quote
NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - Recreation on the Guadalupe River inside the New Braunfels city limits will be limited to guided raft trips beginning Tuesday, city officials said.

Water release from Canyon Lake due to flooding will make conditions for most forms of recreation, including tubing and most forms of rafting and kayaking, dangerous, city public information officer Sheri Masterson said.
More Weather Headlines

Starting at 7 p.m. Monday, incremental flood release increases will be made to achieve a flow of 2,500 cubic feet per second by midnight, Masterson said. The flow will increase to 5,000 cubic feet per second around 4 a.m. Tuesday and will be maintained at that rate until the lake flood pool drops to 911 feet.

Tubing on the river is a big part of the local economy

Should help the aquifers fill back up from the drought.  The weather in Texas has been weird.  Never saw as much rain in the San Antonio area as during the last two winters I spent there.  Hope this next winter is different.  At least where I park MY RV is usually high and dry.

We only have 2 roads in and out of our sub division.  The wife is sitting at one of those right now with about 4' of water covering the road.  Deputy said it might go down in the next hour but I told her to turn around and go have supper some where.  If it's not down by the time she's back then she just needs to head back to town and spend the night.  I'll have to suffer with the left over green chili pork roast we made yesterday.  Hope there's tortillas left.

4 FEET!!! dang

You need a jet ski!

Hmmm...rain or hail.  Both my folks and sister had severe hail damage several weeks ago near I10 and 1604. They haven't even gotten all THAT damage fixed yet.  Glad I left at the end of Feb.  But it took until Memorial Day up here to finally warm up.

Fort Bend residents seek higher ground, prepare for worst
Posted: May 31, 2016 1:17 PM CST Updated: May 31, 2016 1:17 PM CST

Quote
RICHMOND, Texas (KHOU) – Evacuations are underway in Fort Bend County as the Brazos River continues to flood its banks.

The river is expected to crest in Rosenberg and Richmond at some point Tuesday afternoon or evening, but several roads are already closed and some communities are taking on water.

Residents in Richmond’s Rio Vista community suddenly had water front property as the quickly rising Brazos began to take over, seeping up through sewer drains.

“This is the first time it's ever come up like this,” said resident Jennifer Torres.

“Well, it's concerning you know?” added Arturo Cano. “To say the least… but there's nothing we can do really.”

According to Alan Spears with the Fort Bend County Office of Emergency Management, once the banks are flooded waters will stay high for several days.

“This is one of those lifetime events,” said Spears. “We are kind of anticipating some things that we've never seen before.”...

Watch Jeep get washed away in New Braunfels!!

Glad no one was inside.  It amazes me how many people drown around here every year from trying to go through low water crossings.

The wife had to wait about 2 hours but the water dropped enough for her to get home last night.  We went back out about an hour after that and the water was about a foot below the road surface.  Funny how it dropped almost as fast as it rose.  Of course round 2 (and possibly round 3 and 4) is on it's way.

Well the next round is in Medina now. I went into Kerrville and raced the black clouds home. It is raining hard now with thunder and lightning but it doesn't look too big on radar but more pop-up storms may form. It is headed east.

Glad your wife made it home safely. The Medina River crossing south of my house was underwater yesterday and may be again now.

Get the raft out cause there's more on the way.  Just looked at the radar and it's purple over by Boerne so figure about an hour from now we'll be filling back up again.

We got lots of wind but only about 1/2" of rain but it all came in a 30 minute period.  Not nearly as hard as yesterday (almost 2" over 55 minutes) but still pretty fast and heavy.  Lots of stuff down by Del Rio that looks headed our way though.

Prayers extended for the soldiers lost at Fort Hood.  It saddens me to know they were in the same model truck as my avatar.  Unfortunately 18-20 year olds think when someone tells them the truck can ford 40" of water they believe that's any water.  While the truck weighs over 17k pounds it can be washed off a road with under 12" of MOVING water.

Saw that on the news last night....absolutely horrible.

We had a lady in Breckenridge die a couple of days ago in similar circumstances.  Her husband was driving and drove into moving water.  The water came up fast...he was able to get his handicapped son out of the truck, then went back for his wife and she had already perished.  He then dragged her lifeless body for a mile to get it out of the water.  Then our local tv station had the gile to interview him on tv......he could hardly talk.....   I can't even imagine.......

That's why here in Arizona we have 'Stupid Driver' laws. if you try to drive through a flooded wash and get stuck,  and emergency services has to rescue you,  you get stuck with the bill.

In San Antonio if you drive around a barrier blocking a flooded street it's a $400 fine.  If you have to be rescued then you get the bill.

18-20 year old kids usually aren't out joy riding in military vehicles without some NCO in charge. No one should have been driving in or around Owl Creek when flash flooding is predicted. That's just crazy. I've seen tanks flipped over in those creeks.

NCOIC could have been in the back not in the co-driver's seat.  Also I knew a lot of NCOs back in the day that didn't have much sense either (officers for that matter) it's not a course section at PLDC.

Oh believe me I know.  I don't know how many reports of survey I've done or seen that easily found negligence from pure stupidity.  Some at Fort Hood very similar to this case.  Incidentally, almost at the same location.

Actually, it's a Texas state law: driving around a flood barricade is a Class B misdemeanor. The penalty can be up to 180 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $2000, plus the cost of any rescue if one is necessary. I suspect that the municipality can set the actual penalty, up to the limits imposed by the State law.

We used a large gasoline fueled pump to fill, borrowed from the local volunteer fire department.  Still using and others to pump out the seepage.

We are drenched but there is no flooding.  We are too far away from the rivers and in some places 40 feet above sea level.  Alvin took 40 inches of rain in 24 hours back in 1979. Our home was one of the 5% or so that did not flood.

apparently those things cost about $8,300

Actually, considering the amount of damage it can prevent in a flood, that seems pretty reasonable.

I don't think that was Thackney being interviewed.  I think it was the previous owner of the house from whom he bought the house.  In a previous post Thackney said the previous owner bought the Aqua Dam in Louisiana.

Of course I could be wrong.

Besides...doesn't look like the same legs on tv and in the snake pic....lol.

Right about the first part.  That was Randy holding the snake while I took the picture.

To hold back 24" of water, ~$19 a foot.

The difficulty in these situations is knowing what size you really need.  36" of water is more than double the price.

We pushed the limits on this one.  Friday morning, after it started moving around, Randy called the company and told them we had about 28" of water against it.  Their reply "OH, that's not good".

It was why we added all the sandbags and 2x4 bracing.  Too much pressure and not enough weight at that point to keep it steady.

Yep.  Our Flood insurance deductible is $5,000 for building and $5,000 on contents.

And we won't spend 4 months or so looking for a place to live while the home is rebuilt.

Well given the fact that this flood is probably the worst you will ever have to deal with you are good to go!

It drained just in time so you can have a weekend of mowing...lol.  I bet the skeeters are going to be just awful there.  Here in north central texas the skeeters are almost unbearable, after all of the rain.  I sprayed both the front and back yards with a skeeter spray, that seemed to help a lot, but I sure wouldn't want to be out there at dawn or sunset.  You'd be eaten alive.

Congrats on saving your house and, Lord willing, you won't ever have to use the Aqua Dam again.

I put out granulated garlic today.  Smells like hell when you first put it out on the yard, but it keeps EVERY critter away, including mosquitoes.

You can also put out cedarcide chips.  But I like the garlic because it's less expensive and IT WORKS!!! Even after you water it in, it continues to repel.

My brother-in-law had a dead battery, we carried the battery for a half-mile (might have killed me, lol). It was "fully charged" which means it's a bad cell and he really needs a new battery.

don't walk in this heat if you can help it

Sorry, just now seeing this.  Yes, the kind you cook with.  You can buy it in large sizes at Sam's.

I've used it for years.  It even works on mosquitoes.  Cedarcide cedar chips do too, but they're more expensive and hard to find unless you have an organic nursery nearby.

Nah, I'm down here in the heel of the hand in Southeastern Jackson County. I'm right on the borderline of moderate and no drought.

It rained pretty good overnight but this has been one of those years where the rain peters out 5 or 10 miles away and leaves us with humidity.

So here just north of Austin we had a thunderstorm late Saturday afternoon, then rain off and on Saturday night through Sunday. It rained fairly steadily overnight and this morning, so far. Depending on the location it looks like we've received between 2-3 inches of rain since Saturday, and it's supposed to continue most of the week.

Yeah, the weather missed where I am for the most part, but some places north of here got 5+ inches of rain and some hail.

In West Texas...we didn't even get a dust storm out of it.

I hate rainy springs in SE Texas.  Mowing becomes an issue.

It's already rained more here in Kentucky than it did some summers total in Midland.  At times I think I need to build an Ark...and find a brush hog for my back yard.

In SE Texas roughly a 1/3 of Aprils and early May are so wet that my riding mower  needs floatation devices to perform its designated task....... :bullie smokin:

Its either that or take a ferry or a damn long drive.

The great lake levels are going to keep rising this year too.

Here's just how soaked Michigan is after spring storms

With that traffic you're not catching a ferry, and your chances at Ludington are nil too.  No, you have to go around the horn (Shitcago, Milf*ckme) or find a hotel in Traverse.  Better do that quickly, because those will sell out about as fast as the ferry rides.

Closures on the Mackinac are a disaster, for the folks reading this not from one of the Peninsulas.  I hope they clear this up soon.

My mother says they used to wait for hours to get to the upper peninsula by ferry.

St Ignace is only 5 miles away from Mackinaw City but its a 10 or 12 hour drive without the bridge.

True dat.  And most went 'round the horn.  Just didn't expect to get a ticket to ride, so they took the day's journey.

Michigan is a big state depending on where you want to drive to.

Its a shorter drive to NYC from Detroit than to Ontonagon From Detroit.

@thackney

Just an FYI.  I purchased one of those rain gauges such that you have in your pic a few months ago.  It's consistently been 1/4 or more off.  Next to it I have 2 glass basic gauges that always show 1/4 or more, MORE rain than the plastic one you have.  I'm not sure if it's the funnel at the top that is causing this or what, but mine is on the way to the trash can.  It's easy to read, but what good is it if it's not accurate.

Just sharing my experience.........

If anyone is interested, you can purchase a very high quality rain gauge that measures down to .01" for about $30.00 at the link below.  It's what I use.

We have barely had any break from rain the past month and more.  Not flooding but we are living in a swamp that won't dry.  I cannot get the tractor into the stalls to use the loader to clean them out.  I've dug a hole near it and put a sump pump down there but it isn't enough.
