The neighbors had a son that loved to come watch me work in my mothers garden. I always had her dog out with me. The one day I was pretty intent on what I was doing when I hear little Vinnie saying "Hey, Hey, Hey". My mothers little Cockapoo was getting between him and the street and herding him back. He was a good dog!
Back in Chicago a stray wandered into our lives... A maybe 2 year old Dane cross we named Duke. We were kinda the gathering house for kids in the neighborhood, and that dog stood proper guard over all us kids the whole time. Over time he put it together from Mamma yelling at us, where we were not supposed to be, and he enforced it. Soon enough Mamma didn't have to yell at all (about that).
The dog was always loose, without a fence, but once he figured out what was ours, he kept everything out that was not supposed to be there... and the only time he left the property was to walk the whole gaggle of kids home - to each and every home- at dinner time, and then back he came.
Hella good dog, Duke was. The whole neighborhood loved that dog.
