U.S. Open win would change everything for Woods, Mickelson, Donald and Westwood

Tiger Woods will pursue his 15th career major title this week at Olympic Club.

SAN FRANCISCO -- The pursuit of a major championship is personal, not business.

It inspires and afflicts golfers in different ways. Payne Stewart was invigorated by competing in majors, our national championship in particular. He dressed in red, white and blue. He eased his nerves by chewing gum. He won two U.S. Opens and a PGA Championship as one of the last true swingers of the club, as the PGA Tour rules official Jon Brendle once put it.

Colin Montgomerie’s thin skin became translucent at the majors, where every cough and heckle became amplified in Dolby Surround. He huffed and puffed and all for naught. His dismal 7-iron at Winged Foot’s final hole in the 2006 U.S. Open haunts him still.

On the eve of the 112th edition of the U.S. Open at the Olympic Club, a curvy, tree-lined test cut out of Bay Area soil (Interactive Map), only one golfer will walk into the sunset at the end a truly happy man. His career might be made. His life will change. The rest will wander off the premises unfulfilled or  worse.

“It’s such a big test,” Tiger Woods said during his press conference Tuesday, “and such a grind.”

In the shrinking global village of professional golf, almost every player will have his share of supporters, even those born elsewhere. Luke Donald attended college at Northwestern. Lee Westwood cheers for the New York Knicks.

Tiger Woods starts fast as Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson struggle in Round 1 at U.S. Open

SAN FRANCISCO
-- Tiger Woods got off to a strong start at the 2012 U.S. Open, posting a one-under 69 in his opening round Thursday morning at the Olympic Club to get near the top of the leaderboard.

His play at the difficult Olympic course -- which he attacked methodically with controlled drives, accurate irons and careful putting -- left Woods in excellent position in his quest to win his 15th major championship.

The unheralded Michael Thompson was the surprise leader after the first round of the US Open after he shot a 66

SAN FRANCISCO -- The scoreboard says Michael Thompson is winning the United States Open, but don’t believe it. The fierce Lake Course at Olympic Club already looks like the real winner here.

Move over, Oakmont. If this keeps up, you may soon have company at the top of the U.S. Open’s Fear and Loathing list. Red numbers are on the endangered species list this week. Only six players broke par Thursday, and only Michael Thompson was better than one under. His four-under 66 made him the traditional little-known, surprise first-round Open leader.

Let’s hope last year’s competitors enjoyed what passed for a birdie-fest by USGA standards at Congressional because they’re about to experience the exact opposite. It’s called a real U.S. Open, where the rough reminds you of the old Jethro Tull song, "Thick as a Brick," four straight pars count as a charge, and the only place to “go for it in two” is at the buffet in player dining.

Maybe the take-no-prisoners tone was set early. Shane Bertsch had the honor of striking the first shot of this Open, and it went way off-line, landing behind an ESPN broadcast tent. That was a quick, and symbolic, bogey.

Up For Grabs!

Jim Furyk, Graeme McDowell tied at Olympic; Woods five back

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- While Tiger Woods tumbled down the leaderboard, Graeme McDowell and Jim Furyk shared the top spot heading into the final round of the U.S. Open.

McDowell stuck his approach to 4-feet on the 18th hole to set up a birdie for a 2-under 68 on Saturday. Furyk followed moments later with a 15-foot putt on the 17th to regain a share of the lead, and closed with a par for a 70.

At 1 under, the two major champions are the only players at the unforgiving Olympic Club course under par.

Fredrik Jacobson shot a 68 to move two strokes back.

Woods wasted his share of the 36-hole lead with six bogeys and only one birdie for a 75. The 14-time major champion will begin the final round five shots back.

Congrats to Webb Simpson. Would have been happy with a Furyk victory, but Webb held it together down the stretch.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Your new U.S. Open champion is a 26-year-old father of one with another on the way. He admits to a weakness for Bojangles biscuits and fried chicken, inspired the USGA to change one of the Rules of Golf, and missed his last two cuts coming into the season's second major at Olympic Club.

James Frederick "Webb" Simpson, who broke through with two victories in 2011 but was in the midst of an unremarkable 2012, carded his second straight 68 at fog-shrouded Olympic for a one-over total and a one-shot victory over Graeme McDowell (73) and Michael Thompson (67) at the 112th Open on Sunday.

"One of my thoughts on the back nine was, 'I don't know how Tiger has won 14 of these things,'" Simpson said, "because the pressure -- I couldn't feel my legs most of the back nine."

McDowell birdied the 17th hole and had a chance to force a Monday playoff, but his birdie putt from 24 feet on the 18th hole wasn't close, missing left. Simpson and his wife, Dowd, watching cell phone videos of their son, James, in an effort to remain calm, hugged after McDowell's ball eased past the hole
