Parents Are Furious Over Program for Gifted Children Being Terminated Simply Because “It Had Too Many White Students”

Parents in Seattle are furious over the termination of a program for the gifted and talented children simply because "it had too many White students."
The Seattle Public Schools (SPS) has a program called Highly Capable Cohort (HCC), which designates classrooms and sometimes entire schools as reserved for kids who can skip ahead and learn above their grade.

Katie McAllister, who's son has ADHD, said that the HCC program "was a real lifesaver" for her son who spoke in full sentences before he was two and learned to read by age four. "I don't know what would have happened if he was in a neighborhood school," she added. "Because he can be really frustrating [to the teachers around him] if he's not challenged."

SPS began phasing out its HCC schools and classrooms for advanced students in the 2021 to 2022 school year to address "historical inequity," because these schools had too many White and Asian students and not enough Black and Hispanic students.  .  .

Of the students enrolled in HCC for the 2022 to 2023 school year, 52 percent were White, 16 percent were Asian and only 3.4 percent were Black.

During a January 22, 2020, school board meeting, parents of Black students in HCC asked the board to consider finding ways to incorporate more Black students into the gifted program rather than shut it down.

"My request is that you please consider the disservice you would be doing to the minorities that are already in the HCC program," one father said at the meeting. “The program does more for Black children, particularly Black boys, than it does for their peers.”

What this tells me is that Seattle schools are doing a piss poor job of educating black kids.  It's what President Bush called "the bigotry of low expectations".

Hard to teach someone whom doesn't want to learn, no matter the color. There was a time most Black families in unbroken homes pursued excellence in education for their children. Then the government stepped in.

Seattle Public Schools is dismantling its gifted and talented program, which administrators argued was oversaturated with white and Asian students, in favor of a more “inclusive, equitable and culturally sensitive” program.

The district began phasing out its Highly Capable Cohort schools and classrooms for advanced students in the 2021-22 school year due to racial inequities, the school district notes.

The program will completely cease to exist by the 2027-28 school year, with a new enrichment-for-all model available in every school by the 2024-25 school year.

Educrats don't think about helping the "under-represented", they just bring down the "over-represented". Except in sports. They won't insist on 5'4" and 5'7" Asian students being proportionally "represented" on basketball and volleyball teams.
