Biden Announces Plan for National 12-Week Paid Family Leave

President Biden announced his plan for a national paid family and medical leave program in a speech Tuesday. Biden said his next budget proposal would include funding for 12 weeks fully paid leave for self and family medical care, as well as for childbirth.
"My budget would finally create a national paid family and medical leave program. Up to 12 weeks to care for newborns, a sick loved one or yourself without losing your income," Biden said. "Look, it's past time America caught up with the rest of the world on paid leave."
The United States is the only nation in the developed world that does not require paid family or medical leave from work. U.S. law requires that women be given up to 12 weeks off for childbirth, but does not require that it be paid time off. Paid medical leave varies state by state, but often American workers must return to work too soon after receiving medical care because they can't afford to take unpaid time off.
