Ex-Trump aide Peter Navarro ordered to report to prison next week

Former trade adviser to the Trump administration Peter Navarro was ordered to report to prison on March 19 to begin his four-month prison sentence after he was convicted on two counts of congressional contempt.

Navarro’s conviction stems from his defiance of a February 2022 subpoena from the now-defunct House Jan. 6 committee. Former President Donald Trump‘s adviser has been asking a federal appeals court to pause his sentence while he appeals his conviction.

“Dr. Navarro has now been ordered to report to the custody of the Bureau of Prisons, FCI Miami, on or before 2:00PM EDT on March 19, 2024,” Navarro’s attorney stated in a court filing late Sunday.

“Accordingly, Dr. Navarro respectfully reiterates his request for an administrative stay,” the attorney wrote. “Should this Court deny Dr. Navarro’s motion, he respectfully requests an administrative stay so as to permit the Supreme Court review of this Court’s denial.”

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, who oversaw Navarro’s trial, declined to allow him to remain out of prison while the appellate process plays out.

Navarro is the second former Trump aide convicted of contempt of Congress. Former White House aide and right-wing podcaster Steve Bannon has been allowed to remain free pending his appeal.
