The coalition involves lifelong Democrats who believe the Democrat party is no longer working in their best interest. After U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz won the Republican nomination in the March 5 primary, his campaign announced a new coalition to get Democrats to cross party lines and re-elect him into office.
“Democrats for Cruz” will include Democrats across Texas who believe the Democrat party is no longer working in their best interest. The coalition will instead work to get out the vote for Cruz in his re-election campaign as he faces off against U.S. Rep. Colin Allred (D-32), who won the Democrat nomination for Senate on Tuesday.
The coalition will comprise of local sheriffs, former and current elected officials, small business owners, students, ranchers, and more who have voted Democrat in the past.
“The national Democratic Party has abandoned Texans. I am proud to welcome the support of Democrats across the Lone Star State who have placed their trust in me to continue leading the fight for jobs, opportunities, and security,” said Cruz. “These Texans know that today’s Democrat Party is not what it used to be. They understand that electing a radical leftist like Colin Allred would be catastrophic to our state and nation because this race is not about Republican or Democrat, it is about making sure that we keep Texas, Texas, no matter what it takes. As Texas goes, so goes the nation.”
The coalition released a video at launch featuring multiple lifelong Democrats explaining why they will be crossing party lines and voting for Cruz in the upcoming election.
Presidio County Sheriff Danny Dominguez—an elected Democrat sheriff for 28 years—was one of the elected officials featured in the video. He said he will be supporting Cruz because border security has “gone out of control” under Democrat leadership.
