An active-duty airman set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C. today, in uniform.


The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department confirmed to Task & Purpose that they received a report about a man on fire outside the embassy just before 1 p.m. Eastern Time and dispatched emergency services. The fire had been extinguished by uniformed members of the Secret Service. EMS took the man to an area hospital, saying he was suffering from “critical life-threatening injuries.”

The incident appears to be in protest of Israel’s war in Gaza. Independent journalist Talia Jane obtained a video of the self-immolation, although it has not been posted online beyond accounts that are quickly taken down. On X, formerly known as Twitter, Jane reports that the man in Air Force uniform said he was “an active duty member of the U.S. Air Force and I will no longer be complicit in genocide.” Filming himself walking, he said that what he was going to do would be minimal compared to what is happening to Palestinians. He then set himself on fire and repeatedly shouted “Free Palestine.”

In the video, the airman identifies himself as Aaron Bushnell. A spokesperson for the U.S. Air Force confirmed to Task & Purpose that the man in uniform is an active-duty airman, however, the Air Force did not confirm the man’s identity or rank in the military.

    Bushnell was raised in a religious compound in Orleans, Mass., on Cape Cod, according to Susan Wilkins, 59, who said she was a member of the group from 1970 to 2005. She said that she knew Bushnell and his family on the compound and that he was still a member when she left in 2005. Wilkins said she heard through members of Bushnell’s family that he eventually left the group.

    The group, called the Community of Jesus, has faced allegations of inappropriate behavior, which it has publicly disputed. In a lawsuit against an Ontario school, where many officials were alleged to be members of the U.S.-based religious group, former students called the Community of Jesus a “charismatic sect” and alleged that it “created an environment of control, intimidation and humiliation that fostered and inflicted enduring harms on its students.” The school, now defunct, disputed the allegations…

    Wilkins also said it is common for members of the Community of Jesus to join the military, describing the transition as moving from “one high-control group to another high-control group.”

All of this prompts WaPo readers to think that the Community of Jesus is some conservative group. The reality is COJ was a leftist cult that appealed to high-flying liberals.  ...

I woke up this morning and began my morning ritual of taking the pulse of the political and cultural battle, and was stunned to see that Leftists across the country are flocking to celebrate Bushnell's suicide as an act of moral courage.

My Twitter feed is filled with celebrations of his commitment to the cause, which suggests to me that the waves of protests in support of Hamas you see today will soon be eclipsed by a new level of violence, mirroring that seen at the height of the Vietnam war.

The political temperature, if you will, is getting even hotter. Not good.

In a country with 330 million people, you can find examples of every bizarre opinion under the sun, so if I saw one or two oddballs celebrating Aaron, I would shrug it off. But protests in support of Aaron have already popped up, and people with millions of followers have embraced Aaron's suicide as praiseworthy.

It is a genuine movement. Few people will go to Aaron's extremes, but many now see him as a martyr.
