Comer defends investigating Biden bribery allegations from since-indicted FBI informant

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) on Sunday defended the GOP’s decision to investigate allegations from a now-indicted FBI informant that President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, accepted bribes totaling $5 million each.
“All we knew about Smirnov was the 1023 allegation,” Comer said on Fox News. “We knew that the FBI had never investigated it, and all we knew was what Christopher Wray told us, that this informant was one of their most trusted and highest paid in the bureau, and he had been in that position for over 10 years.”
“So, that’s all we knew about him, he wasn’t an important part of the case, but it was a tip that we should investigate,” Comer said.
The House Republican was referring to Alexander Smirnov, who was charged in February with making false statements against Joe Biden. Smirnov was re-arrested in Nevada on a new warrant, and the criminal case will be overseen by federal district Judge Otis Wright in California.
The bribery allegations have fueled efforts by the GOP to impeach the president in connection to his family’s business dealings in Ukraine and China. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), ranking member for the Oversight Committee, told reporters this week he finds the GOP’s impeachment efforts “essentially ended” with the revelation that Smirnov told the FBI he obtained dirt on Hunter Biden from Russian intelligence officials.
“We were not going to leave any stone unturned,” Comer added on Fox News. “We’re going to investigate every allegation of Biden influence peddling.”
