Special counsel David Weiss on Thursday charged ex-FBI informant Alexander Smirnov over allegedly lying about the Biden family's involvement with Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian energy firm at the center of an alleged bribery scheme.

Authorities detained Smirnov at Harry Reid International Airport on Thursday, CNN reported. He is expected in court later the same day.

Burisma has been under scrutiny for corruption for many years and last year was at the center of an alleged bribery scheme in which a Burisma executive allegedly hired Hunter Biden to secure access to his then-vice president father, and paid $5 million to two members of the Biden family to stifle a probe from then-Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin, who was investigating the company.

An unclassified FBI FD-1023 containing confidential human source information became public in July of last year detailing the alleged effort. The Bidens have denied wrongdoing.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An FBI informant has been charged with lying to his handler about ties between President Joe Biden, his son Hunter and a Ukrainian energy company.

Alexander Smirnov falsely told FBI agents in June 2020 that executives associated with the Ukrainian energy company Burisma paid Hunter and Joe Biden $5 million each in 2015 or 2016, prosecutors said Thursday.

Smirnov told the FBI that a Burisma executive had claimed to have hired Hunter Biden to “protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems,” prosecutors said.

The allegations became a flashpoint in Congress last summer as Republicans demanded the FBI release the unredacted form documenting the allegations as they pursued investigations of Biden and his family. They acknowledged at the time that it was unclear if the allegations were true.

Prosecutors say that though Smirnov claimed to have had contact with Burisma executives near the end of the Obama administration, it actually took place after Obama and Biden had left office — when Biden would have had no ability to influence U.S. policy.

“In short, the Defendant transformed his routine and unextraordinary business contacts with Burisma in 2017 and later into bribery allegations against Public Official 1, the presumptive nominee of one of the two major political parties for President, after expressing bias against Public Official 1 and his candidacy,” the indictment said.

He repeated some of the false claims when he was interviewed by FBI agents in September 2023 and changed his story about others and “promoted a new false narrative after he said he met with Russian officials,” prosecutors said.

Smirnov, 43, was indicted on charges of making a false statement and creating a false and fictitious record. No attorney was immediately listed for him in court records. He was expected to make a first court appearance in Las Vegas, where he was arrested Wednesday after arriving from overseas, prosecutors said.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.

The charges were filed by Justice Department special counsel David Weiss, who has separately charged Hunter Biden with firearm and tax violations.

If this paid, long-term, trusted FBI confidential human source really did lie to his FBI handler when he alleged that Joe and Hunter Biden each had received a $5m bribe from Burisma, then he deserves what he gets.
But:
1. Why didn’t Weiss investigate the CHS’ allegations in the June 2020 FD-1023 when the Pittsburgh USA was trying to brief his office.
2. Why hide the FD-1023 from the investigators?
3. Why only investigate it after he becomes Special Counsel?
4. Why did the FBI not investigate the CHS’ earlier allegations in the 2017 FD-1023.
5. Why did the FBI fight so hard to keep both FD-1023s from congressional oversight?

FBI informant central to Biden family investigation indicted over false statements

An FBI informant has been charged with two counts of making false statements to federal authorities about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden’s business with a Ukrainian energy company.

A grand jury in the Central District of California indicted Alexander Smirnov, 43, as part of special counsel David Weiss’s investigation, with Weiss separately having investigated Hunter Biden for firearm and tax violations.

The 37-page indictment said Smirnov was an informant with the FBI since 2010. Smirnov allegedly told the FBI in 2020 that Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company, hired Hunter Biden to “protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems,” which the indictment stated is a false statement. In another, according to the Department of Justice, Smirnov said Burisma officials paid Hunter Biden and the president $5 million each when Joe Biden was vice president.

According to the indictment, the claims Smirnov first made to the FBI in June 2020 “were fabrications.” Joe Biden is described in the court documents as “Public Official 1,” while Hunter Biden is described as “Businessperson 1.”

The indictment claimed that while Smirnov said he had contact with Burisma officials during Joe Biden’s time in the Obama administration, he only had contact after the then-vice president left office in 2017 when he “had no ability to influence U.S. policy.”

It's a shame that a staunch, strong conservative was bypassed.  I don't think we'll get another opportunity like that again.  We pretty much have sunk our own ship. Even at that, it is doubtful that another election won't be stolen.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) is calling on House Republicans to end their impeachment inquiry into President Biden following the indictment of the FBI informant at the center of the conference’s allegations that the president accepted a bribe.

The statement from Raskin — the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee — came shortly after the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced charges against Alexander Smirnov, 43, on accusations that he made up claims regarding Biden. He was charged with making a false statement and creating a false and fictitious record as part of the investigation being led by special counsel David Weiss.

Republicans have cited conversations Smirnov, previously known only as a confidential source, had with the FBI, in which he said the head of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma informed him that he paid Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, each $5 million in an effort to avoid scrutiny of his company. Those allegations are at the heart of the GOP’s claim that the president accepted a bribe.

“In a detailed indictment, Special Counsel David Weiss—who was appointed by former President Donald Trump—has demonstrated how key evidence at the heart of House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry is based on a lie,” Raskin said. “Special Counsel Weiss’s investigation is just the most recent to debunk the Ukraine-Burisma conspiracy theory at the heart of this fraudulent impeachment inquiry.”

“It is an undeniable fact that Republicans’ allegations against President Biden have always been a tissue of lies built on conspiracy theories, and I formally call on Speaker Johnson, Chairman Comer, and House Republicans to stop promoting this nonsense and end their doomed impeachment inquiry,” he added.

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) shot back at Raskin, calling him “a broken record having called for an end to our investigation since the day it started.”

“He isn’t credible,” Comer said, later adding: “The American people demand the truth and accountability for any wrongdoing. We will continue to follow the facts to propose legislation to reform federal ethics laws and to determine whether articles of impeachment are warranted.”
