First responders have launched a search mission after a U.S. military helicopter carrying five U.S. Marines went missing on a flight from Nevada to California on Tuesday.

The Marines say they are in contact with the San Diego County Sheriff's Office and are coordinating search efforts. The CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter had departed Creech Air Force Base in Nevada en route to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar near San Diego on Tuesday night.

"The U.S. Marine Corps is searching for five U.S. Marines assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing," Marine Corps Air Station Miramar confirmed to Fox News. "The Marines were flying a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter from Creech Air Force Base to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on Feb. 6, 2024, when the aircraft was reported overdue.

"The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing is coordinating search and rescue efforts with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and the Civil Air Patrol. The most up-to-date information will be released as it becomes available," the statement continued.

As I've said before, it seems odd there are so many accidents with helicopters in the military. Both at home and abroad. So is it a problem with the aircraft or user error?

There are also fewer competent people in the military these days. Merit is no longer the first consideration.

The San Diego Sheriff's Office attempted to send a helicopter to begin the search immediately, but the aircraft was called off due to the "atmospheric river" storm hitting the area.
I wonder why the Marine helicopter was in the air at all, if the weather was that bad.

There's crashed, and there's crashed. If they found the helo, what condition was it in? (Mostly intact, damaged, severely damaged, destroyed) that might determine if this is a rescue operation or recovery. You'd think they'd be nearby in the instance of a forced landing, perhaps trying to transport someone injured to medical care if it was damaged, and likely they'd be close to the wreckage (or debris trail) if the crash was severe.

Pretty sketchy info, imho.

Five U.S. Marines Confirmed Dead in California Helicopter Crash

Five U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) members aboard a helicopter that went missing on a flight from Nevada to California were confirmed dead Thursday morning.

A search-and-rescue operation was launched for the CH-53E Super Stallion after it was “reported overdue” on Wednesday, as Breitbart News reported.

The heavy-lift cargo helicopter was on a training flight from a Nevada Air Force base to an air station near San Diego.

The crew was flying in an historic storm that dumped snow and rain across California, conditions that also hampered search and rescue efforts.

It was later found in the snow-covered California mountains – about 45 miles from its destination.

“It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I share the loss of five outstanding Marines from 3d Marine Aircraft Wing and the ‘Flying Tigers,'” Maj Gen Michael J Borgschulte, commander of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, said in a statement on Thursday.

The names of the deceased are yet to be released.

The five were assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Aircraft Group 16, Third Marine Aircraft Wing, USMC told CBS News.
