DHS Chief Mayorkas Praises Senate Bill for Preserving Biden’s Parole Pipeline at Southern Border

President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is praising a Senate bill from Sens. James Lankford (R-OK), Chris Murphy (D-CT), and Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) mostly for preserving the administration’s massive parole pipeline that has freed hundreds of thousands of border crossers into American communities.

Senate Bill Gives Ukraine 75 Times as Much Funding as U.S. Border Wall

A Senate bill would provide a measly $650 million to continue building a border wall at the United States-Mexico border while Ukraine would be sent $48 billion in American taxpayer money.

🚨The new Senate border bill is out (https://appropriations.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/emergency_national_security_supplemental_bill_text.pdf) and we are evaluating it, but here are TEN things you should know to start with (there are more).

In sum, it appears to be WORSE THAN the current law.

The "Border Security" part of the bill is just more detention facilities, zero for a wall.  Bad deal.

Whip list: Opposition to Senate border bill grows
by The Hill staff - 02/05/24 1:53 PM ET

The bipartisan border deal released Sunday night is facing stiff opposition in the Senate ahead of an expected procedural vote this week.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) said, “No self-respecting senator should agree to vote on this 370-page bill this week,” and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) called it “an open-borders bill if I’ve ever seen one.”

Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), chair of the Senate GOP campaign arm, also said Monday he would oppose the bill, while Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a top ally of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), said Monday that he has “serious concerns.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he planned to hold an initial procedural vote on the bill this week.

At stake is more than just reforms to border policy. The supplemental funding request that contains the border component also includes funds for Ukraine, Israel and other foreign policy priorities.

Here’s where senators stand on the measure in its current form:
GOP ‘no’ votes

Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.)

Mike Braun (Ind.)

Katie Britt (Ala.)

Tom Cotton (Ark.)

Ted Cruz (Texas)

Steve Daines (Mont.)

Bill Hagerty (Tenn.)

Josh Hawley (Mo.)

Ron Johnson (Wis.)

Mike Lee (Utah)

Roger Marshall (Kan.)

Rand Paul (Ky.)

Marco Rubio (Fla.)

Rick Scott (Fla.)

Eric Schmitt (Mo.)

Tommy Tuberville (Ala.)

JD Vance (Ohio)
Democratic ‘no’ votes

Bob Menendez (N.J.)

Alex Padilla (Calif.)

Sen. Ted Cruz Calls Senate Border Bill a ‘Stinking Pile of Crap’

Cruz called the Senate border bill a “stinking pile of crap,” indicating he would vote against the bill if it comes up for a vote on the Senate floor Wednesday.

Nonsense.  Biteme can just have the numbers of encounters fudged, like the Unemployment numbers.  Besides, he can mandate Zero crossings with the laws we have right now.

Under The Senate’s Atrocious Border Bill, Everybody Gets Asylum
Congress apparently wants to open America to every citizen of the world who heralds from a country where the government cannot control crime.
By: Margot Cleveland

The Federalist
Quote
The Senate’s emergency appropriations bill released on Sunday won’t address the border crisis, and contrary to the accomplice media’s spin, the spending bill won’t “severely curtail asylum at the US southern border.”

The bill could have had the Senate reclaim the reins of lawmaking from the executive and judicial branches and clarify that widespread criminality in another country is not a basis for asylum in America. Instead, the 370-page bill, the “Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2024,” includes funding for both Israel and Ukraine, plus decidedly insufficient provisions for addressing aliens and immigration.

The backers of the Senate bill seek to portray its provisions as, in the words of Joe Biden, the “toughest and fairest set of border reforms in decades.” There is little that is “tough” in the bill, however, and what is can easily be sidestepped — either by the Biden administration or the throngs of illegal aliens invading from the south.

Consider, for instance, the “emergency authority” the bill would grant to the secretary of homeland security to “summarily remove” aliens. But that authority only arises if the number of encounters with aliens at the border averages 4,000 for seven consecutive days or more than 8,500 in any one day.  ...

The problem I have is that it only grants "authority" to shut down the border -- it doesn't mandate it, which means it could easily be ignored/disregarded/explained away by the Biden Administration.  It also is dependent upon certain thresholds being met, and exactly which Administration would we be relying upon to count those thresholds anyway?  The tipoff is there is a sunset provision so a future Administration that wants to be tougher on the border wouldn't have these powers for long anyway.

If they want something serious, pass legislation authorizing states to turn away migrants unless they already have been processed by federal authorities.

They sure di waste a lot of time and energy on a bill that's dead on arrival in the House. Unless Speaker Johnson caves, that is, and allows it to get to the floor so that all the Democrats and a handful of RINOS can vote for it.

Another big loophole that the open border advocates will use.

Then there are the sunset provisions

This is why I get so darn furious; this crappola is getting old.  Anyone remember the Secure Fence Act that was passed by both the Dems and GOP in 2006?  I think 18 flippin' years is enough time to come up with the money and manpower to complete the dang thing especially when we give away billions to other countries.

I don't think it is corruption as much as it is just them being out of touch.  Or maybe just not caring about a lot of their fellow Americans.  I know because I used to think that same way.

To some Republicans -- and virtually all Democrats -- we need a lot more immigrants to perform low-wage jobs that Americans don't want to do.  To them, it's a "win-win".  Those people get jobs and a better life, and "we" get cheaper goods/services.  They see that as so clear that they can't imagine any reason but racism/xenophobia to oppose that.

What they are missing is that these actions prevent the proper operation of the labor market.  By importing workers willing to do menial jobs on the cheap, they prevent wages from rising.  And generally with illegals, we're talking wages for the lower/working classes.  I didn't see that clearly until I started negotiating management-side labor contracts for low-skilled/unskilled labor, and saw first-hand how what is termed a "labor-shortage" is basically the mechanism to raise wages for those lower skilled workers.

In essence, some wealthier folks want their cheap nannies, and gardeners, and laborers, etc., -- which most Americans can't afford anyway -- and more low-skilled immigration is the way to achieve that.  Not to mention that a great many of those alleged low-skilled "workers" won't really work at all, and will just consume taxpayer-financed resources.  Those wealthier folks who feel that way -- many of them Republicans -- are joined by progressives who just like the idea of having a less-white country.  Or at a minimum, importing more eventual voters likely to lean left given that they're coming from more socialistic countries.  That sounds crude, but I think it is true, and I've heard enough of them express that in so many words that I'm convinced that's real.

Quite naturally, American lower-skilled workers and those sympathetic to them oppose all that.

That is what is really going on.

Mitch McConnell Turns Against Border Bill

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) made the shocking decision to recommend Republicans block the advancement of the Senate pro-migration border bill.

That first procedural vote was set for Wednesday. It is unknown if Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will forge ahead, although that is likely.

McConnell cited the overwhelming number of Senate Republicans planning to vote against the measure either on substance or because they wanted more time, according to Punchbowl News.

The longtime Republican leader has spoken in favor of the deal and did not express any personal hesitations about the legislation to his colleagues.

According to Punchbowl, McConnell said the political mood in the country has changed since negotiations began months ago. At that time, McConnell and Democrat leaders agreed to pair foreign aid to Ukraine, of which McConnell is the Senate’s greatest champion, with a border compromise.
