‘Squad’ Democrat Pressley slams Walgreens for closing locations in minority communities: ‘Demand answers’

Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) blasted Walgreens Pharmacy for closing locations in minority communities, following the company’s announcement that it will close its location in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts.

The “Squad” Democrat said on the House floor on Tuesday that she joined with Sens. Edward Markey (D-MA) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) to “demand answers” from Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth.

“Shame on you, Walgreens,” Pressley said. “Walgreens is a multibillion-dollar corporation that needs to put their money where their mouth is and stop divesting from black and brown communities.”

“Having a website with talking points about health equity and underserved communities is not enough,” she said.

Megan Boyd, a spokeswoman for Walgreens, apologized for the “inconvenience” caused by the decision and explained that “Roxbury’s closure was due to several factors including the cost of operating, low prescription volume and low reimbursement rates.”

“Walgreens is committed to health equity and nearly half of our stores we operate in the greater Boston area are in neighborhoods that have been traditionally underserved,” Boyd told the Washington Examiner, describing the efforts Walgreens made to “ease the transition.” This included the transfer of patients’ prescriptions, offering free same-day delivery for 90 days, helping customers through its mobile application and rewards program, and delaying the initial store closure by two weeks.

They know the answer

These stores need to quit beating around the bush and say exactly the reason why these stores are leaving
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

That's the same story about the lack of grocery stores in mostly black areas of many major cities. Why is that?
Why would big name grocery store owners not want to place their stores in those areas? Racism? Really? That's the implication I get when I read stories about black mothers forced to ride buses to distant grocery stores.
The stories never mention that the reason there are no major grocery stores in the black sections of many cities is because they get robbed blind. They can't make a profit.
The question: why don't all the multi millionaire and billionaire black big names like Oprah Winfrey and many others buy some grocery stores and put them in those grocery store-less black areas?
I'm guessing that even a white people basher like Winfrey doesn't like to lose money either.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
